If you live in the United States, you might want to contact your congressperson now about
a fiscal 2008 funding bill to be voted on tomorrow that will help to support Crohn's research.
The Labor-HHS bill (Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education) allocates $30 billion for the NIH (National Institutes of Health), up $1.1 billion or 3.8% over last year.
Why does this matter? The NIH was the only entity to fund the successful clinical trials of LDN (low dose naltrexone) when the CCFA took a pass on funding this novel research.
The bill also seeks continued funding for the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Epidemiology Program at the CDC, which is providing "information regarding the unique demographic characteristics of the IBD patient population in the U.S. Current funding is $689,000."
The president threatens to veto the bill because its funding is higher than his own proposed budget, which "calls for a cut for NIH, elimination of health professions training at HRSA, deep reductions in CDC's budget, and essentially level funding for AHRQ."
