Nausia from 6MP

Has anyone experienced the Nausia from 6mp when just starting it and how long does it usually last?

I have not but I have seen a number of posts that suggest taking any meds that cause nausea at bedtime to alleviate that symptom.

I no longer take 6mp but when I did I found that taking it at bedtime cancelled out all the side effects.  Try taking it at night and see if it helps.  I have heard also that eventually it goes away.  Good luck!

Well maybe I have been taking the pres wrong! It says take 3 pills every day. I have been spacing them out over three meals. Maybe I should take them all at once before bed?

i had 6mp god was i ill i had to be admitted constant vomitting sore joints and dehydration i could not even walk it was hell i had to be taken off it i cnt tolerate oral drugs so i had to put on methotrexate iv do you take anti sickness meds for your crohns??????? over here in the uk they prescribe me domperidone works wonders for me if you are not on any anti sickness meds you could try crystalised ginger that works also hope all goes well for you take care

Did they do any tests to see if it was the 6mp that caused the joint pain?  What did your doctors say?  And now you're on MTX with no side effects?  I'm going through the same thing and not sure what to do from here. 

Sorry about hijacking your thread Doc.  I haven't had any nausea since the first couple days and I'm not even sure it had anything to do with the 6mp.  What does your doctor say?

Imuran and 6MP do cause nausea in a number of people. That is the reason the prescription bottle should say that it is to be taken with meals. Not just a cracker but a substantial meal. If I do not enough when I take mine I get nauseated. Immunomodulators like 6MP are usually prescribed to be taken as one dose during the day unless your doctor specifically orders something else. Many members here that experienced lots of nausea found that taking the med in the evening helped thwart the nausea side effect.

I was on 6 mp and it was hell. I did experience severe joint pain which was initially attributed to the 6-mp because something about uric (sp) acid crystalizing. Anyway, I had HORRIBLE headaches, was lethargic and always nauseas. Phenergan works great for nausea. Taking the 6mp at night helped with the dizziness and nausea, but I still had constant headaches. Also, my hair was falling out. 6mp can be great for some and awful for others. I hope you find the fix!

I was on this for years and never noticed that problem. I took it in the am w/ breakfast the first year though and later at bedtime. Maybe that prevented the sideeffects. Hope you can through this thouhg, because 6mp can be a miracle drug for some people (myself included).

I take azathioprine (generic Imuran), similar to 6-MP. After around the second week of taking it, I had some nausea and fatigue a few times a day on a daily basis. However, I stuck with it, and continued to take it twice a day as my doctor had prescribed, figuring that it might go away with time as my body adjusted to the medication. Indeed, the fatigue and the nausea totally disappeared after another two or three weeks and have not recurred. I have also found that I don't need to take it with food; it makes no difference for me. Of course, if you do develop debilitating symptoms, do check them out, but I thought it might help to know that mild symptoms can be transient and no big deal.
