Does anybody here use Colistimethate (Colistin or Coly Mycin)?

Hi everyone,

I'm doing a little research on Colistimethate (Colistin) and I was wondering if anyone here uses it.  If so, how do you use it?  How is it administered?  Is it part of your daily routine or how often is it used?  Also, is it used at home or in a hospital/clinical setting?

My daughter has used it many times. She has a different bacteria (alcaligenes) then pseudomonus that causes her problems. This bacteria is resistant to all drugs. The docs have done synergy testing to see if combinations of drugs seem to work and they found that colistin is one that works with other antibiotics. She takes in through her nebulizer. She has taken this at home and at some of her hospitalizatins. One thing we have found is that it can somewhat irritate her lungs if she stays on it longer then 2 weeks. Now, they keep it to two weeks and it seems to work.

Colistin is a dry powder that was originally formulated to be used as an IV antibiotic. Off label is is used as an inhaled antibiotic. It's like TOBI that way, but a little more cumbersome to use since you are required to mix the dry powder formula with sterile water to make the formulation that is then nebulized. It is nebulized twice daily (again, similar to TOBI). We have alternated TOBI and colistin several years with some benefit. We have alternated with 2 week cycles and 1 month cycles. We have not had any problems with irritation, but our Dr. has told us that if it is irritating we can add more sterile water to the treatment. Hope this helps and good luck!

i use it...i really like it better than Tobi...It taste a lot better....I use it 2 times a day for 2 weeks. You have to take the powder and mix 3ml of sterile water...then draw up 1 ml and put in your neb,...then mix it with...3 ml of normal saline...it has to be stored in the refrig....hope this helps
