Sad because I know I won't have my old dog much longer

I have two dogs, both mini poodles - the medium size, and they are 13 and 16,4 mos.  The old dog is really starting to fail.  He is deaf, does not see well, has weak back legs and stumbles a lot. He also has a problem with having wetting accidents.  The vet saw him in April and said he was still doing OK, strong heart and blood tests showing no organ or other problems. The vet told me I will no when his quality of life is no longer good.  I see him everyday so I notice the little problems all the time.  He still has a good appetite and he seems happy enough but I know that at this age he doesn't have long and I will have to have him put to sleep.  That is going to be heartbreaking. He has been a family member for so long and also my mother picked him out when she came to live with us.  I have had to put one other dog to sleep but that was a long time ago.  And then I had another dog that died from cancer.  At least I will still have my 13 yr old dog and I adore him so that will help me.  I am just sad at the thought of having to go thru this heartbreak.

Aurora,

I know how you feel, it is so sad.  I had one of my 2 dobies put to sleep in November and I still call the other one the wrong name from time to time.

Putting my arms around you , Knowing how you are feeling , my heart goes out to you , had to make the same desision last year for my sweet 15 year old friend . Kitt says it well , I know you will do the best for him, this is what comforted me in my grief , that I did the best for her and she kept her dignity .

Am here to comfort and support you through this Oh so difficult time .

Dogs are just hearts on legs . He has had a wonderful life with you .

Hi Aurora,

I also have two dogs, one is about 12 and the other one is 8.

I have had dogs all of my life, and they were all big ones. I like german shepards. But the bigger they are the younger they go on you. It is so hard, but once somebody told me, just think about how fortunate you were to have this companion and remember the good times. So I try to look at it that way. It does make it somewhat easier, but I still grieve every dog that I ever had, they are so special. They love unconditionally and I think that is what causes us to love them so much.

We are here for you, remember that. We will help you through the grief when the time comes. Bless you for loving animals so much. You are a very special person.

Thanks to Dejavu, Kitt & Karen for your replies.  You all know how it is to lose a beloved pet and it helps me to know I can count on you.  I too have had dogs all my life so this is hard.  I'm probably not going to get any more dogs as I hope to move within 5 yrs, probably to a condo and they might not alow pets and I think it would be terribly hard to have to give one up.  I will have to see how it goes whenever I find new digs.  I'll keep you posted.  As long as my dog has an appetite and he seems happy I will just keep him going.  I have put plastic bags on the carpeting and towels and area rugs over them to help with the accidents.  My house looks a mess and I am always doing laundry but it that is what works I will keep doing it.  Only problem is it looks like my washing machine it going on the fritz and I may have to replace it.  Like Gilda Radner used to say if it's not one thing it's another.

It is funny that you mentioned Gilda Radner. I was just saying yesterday "it's always something" and thought about her. What a coincidence... That is strange.

That is certainly a coincidence.  I think we are all getting to know each other and are starting to think alike in some ways.  And you have to admit, Gilda Radner was really great for a good laugh.

I love to laugh. I really like comedy. Situation and stand up. They are both so entertaining to me. I could watch comedy all day long.

:(... It's hard to let go of one's beloved companions, but you got to think that it's for the best. I had a Shih Tzu named Buttons... He was a great dog. He started having really bad back problems, though... and then he got to suffering... He wouldn't go outside, he wouldn't eat, he wouldn't play. He cried all the time because he was hurting so much. :(... It was really sad, but he had to be put to sleep. I still miss him and think about him, but like with any death... you move on. Time heals all wounds, and all that.
