Hey tsdearman,
The fact that you are questioning what music you listen to is good. Music can actually be a negative influence, depending on what type of message the music carries. My ex-husband was a Metallica fan. I liked the occasional Metallica song myself, but my ex became addicted. It started with "Mandatory Metallica" playing on the radio, every weeknight at 10pm. Then my ex started going out to his car to get the "full sound system" effect of the Metallica. Twenty minutes on the radio turned into two hours from the CDs, still in his car. He got angry, selfish, and distructive. He started driving around listening to Metallica, getting more careless every day. Then he started picking up other women on the internet, and talking to them on his cell phone during "Mandatory Metallica". Generally, the more he wrapped himself up in the music, the more he removed himself from his life. Pretty soon, I saw the writing on the wall. I couldn't even connect with my ex anymore. He wasn't willing to change anything, not even his music. Basically, he chose his "Metallica World" to the real world, and I kicked him to the curb.
Listening to sad songs when you are sad is fine, happy songs when you are happy. However, if the music begins to dictate your mood to you, check yourself and go read a book.
Best wishes,
Leigh Ann
