need help with sleep medicine please

Hi,

I know that I am posting on the wrong board but I haven't got any replies yet on the alzheimer's board. My father is fixing to have to go in the nursing home. He has not been sleeping at night or much in the daytime. The doctors have tried haldol,demoral, ambien, benedryl, ativan and temazepam to help him sleep. None of these work, in fact they make his alzheimers worse. Does anybody have any suggestions that we could try?

I would like for him to be sleeping at night before he goes to the nursing home. If he's not, it's going to be a disaster because they will just drug him up and that will make him more confused. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Good Morning,

I am only throwing this out there but ask your Father's physician about Trazodone.  It is used off label for insomnia in many people.  Of course I am not a professioanl so this is only an idea for you to look into.

I will ask the Dr. for that tomorrow. It can't be any worse than the other stuff that we have tried.

Hi 9ball,

I am just wanting to welcome you to the depression forum. I hope that you can find some answers here.

This must really be effecting your mental health. So I must say to take things one day at a time and have faith that this will work out for your father. Sometimes just a change in environment can make a difference. I will be praying for him and for you.

I have had sleeping problems my whole life and have taken several diferent tpyes of medications to help me sleep to no avail.  I finally was prescribed serequel and finally I had a medicine that helped.  I think everybodys' body takes sleeping meds different.  Many of my friends say that they don't understand why such and such doesn't knock me out.  It does them. Well I wish i knew.  Anyway, good luck with this and keep us informed.

We tried Daddy on trazadone last night. I don't know if it was because he only had 4 hours of sleep in the last week or if it was the medicine, but he slept all night. I thank you for the suggestion. We had to put him in the nursing home today, so maybe he will sleep there and won't give them any problems.
