Effexor side effects

Hi All

I have been taking Effexor for about three months now and have experienced side effects. I have had a really sore throat for about 3 weeks now which does not seem to be getting any better i have been to the doctor who gave me a spray but this has not helped could this be a side effect?

i have been on Effexor for a few years now. i dont remember that being a side effect.
it is probably just coincidental that you have a sore throat, and is probably completely unrelated. besides, side effects dont usually last 3 weeks. hope you feel better though!

I used effexor for a number of years and I got some side-effects related to my sex-drive and sleep, but other than that it was fine, except when I tried to stop it I got bad withdrawal symptums..

Hey there,

I am weaning off Cymbalta as I would like to try going without an AD. My Pdoc does not believe I will be able to stay off AD's and Effexor is the next in her arsenal.

Effexor is an antidepressant in a group of drugs called selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SSNRIs).

Effexor is used to treat major depressive disorder, anxiety, and panic disorder

Take this medication exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not take the medication in larger amounts, or take it for longer than recommended by your doctor. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose to make sure you get the best results from the medication. Follow the directions on your prescription label.

Take this medication with a full glass of water. Effexor should be taken with food.

Avoid drinking alcohol, which can increase some of the side effects of Effexor

side effects are more likely to occur, such as:

drowsiness, dizziness, nervousness, or anxiety;

dry mouth, increased sweating;

nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation;

decreased sex drive, impotence, or difficulty having an orgasm;

headache, blurred vision;

tremor or chills; or

changes in appetite or weight.

Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.

3 weeks is a long time for a sore throat, any other problems that may be the reason for the sore throat?

Thanks for the reply guys. Kitt you are right 3 weeks is a long time to have a sore throat which is why i was starting to think it might be a side effect, i have been to the doctor who gave me a spray but as you no i am in france at the moment so there was a bit of a language barrier. It is really starting to get me down and affecting my sleep and as you know Kitt my sleep is not good anyway without this extra problem. I have been taking a lot of pain killers for the pain and i am anxious about mixing medications but i need something to help.

Any advice welcome.

Hey Ben,

I am sorry this is going on and with you in France I can understand your difficulty in the communication issues.

The best known remedy is honey and lemon This is made by adding one tablespoon honey and the juice of one lemon to one cup of warm water. It should be sipped slowly yet not allowed to become cold.

A simple variation of the honey lemon tea is to mix the juice of one lemon with 1 tablespoon honey. Combine together and take a tablespoon every half hour.

Chamomile tea is also said to relieve a sore throat and is another herbal remedy that is also useful for relieving stress.

I hope you are soon feeling better, if not do get a recheck.

I have been taking this medication for a couple of years now and had a few side effects in the first month. Nausea, dizziness etc but they did dissappear. Maybe your sore throat isn't a side effect of the medication and just this awful flu virus that has been going around. It could just be a coincidence. If it continues, I would go back to your doctor to get a throat swab.

Victoria i think you could be wright and it could be this flu virus thats going about, i get bad health anxiety so always think the worst.

There is a lot going around at the moment and a few of my friends have had the virus twice! If you suffer from health anxiety, you will automatically look for a reason as to why you feel the way you do but I think this time, it could be a coincidence and you have caught some nasty germs off someone. Everyone I know seems to have had this horrible flu virus. Keep warm, drink plenty and you will feel better in no time.

Hi All

I have been getting body jerks kind of like small electric shocks could this be from the Effexor?

Yeah this could be a side effect. I had something like this when I first started taking it. I could be lying down and my legs would twitch involuntarily. This did go away and it's nothing to worry about at all. Once your system gets used to the meds, the side effects should go. Try not to worry or focus in on them too much as that can sometimes make things worse. Take care

Thanks for reply. I seem to get them at night time in legs and arms which is a little unsettling but you are right and I should not focus in on them to much.

Yeah I used to get them at night time too. You can also get these wierd twitches when you are going off to sleep and your body is relaxing. My boyfriend gets them a lot.

Hey unhappy,

when I was on effexor my mouth was ALWAYS dry, so you need to drink lots of water if i found while taking effexor. I personally found effexor to not help me so much and I FINALLY got off of it without experiencing severe nauseau now and feeling weird and I feel a lot more alive.

I get a dry mouth as well. I have still to find an antidepressant that works for me and im beginning to give up on them, you here all these wonder stories about them but for some reason they have not worked for me which is a bot depressing in itself.

Has anybody tried abilify with the effexor? That worked for me.

Hi Ben,

Abilify is a mood stablizer. It is used a lot for bipolar, though I am not diagnosed as such. But since I have been taking it with the effexor, I have felt pretty good. So I know that it has helped me a lot.

They have been having tv commercials on this medication lately. I think that it is relatively new.

I hope that your doctor will let you try it.
