Just want your opinions on sleep medications' effect on depression. I can't sleep w/o Ambien or Restoril, but my depression is raging. Suggestions please -- I'm desperate.

turn Hi! My suggestion is to try Amitriptyline. It is very inexpensive(I paid $10 for 90 tabs. ) It will help with your pain, depression and aid in getting some sleep. The experience I have had with it is all on a very positive note. Good luck, Donna eyes blush

Hi

I have tried a few of the benzodiazepines to help aid sleep but have not taken any for a long time. There are a number of antidepressants which can help with your depression and also aid sleep one of which (Amitriptyline) was mentioned in the previous post, others include mirtazipine and trazadone. I would go and chat with your doctor and see what he says.

I was on Lunest for a time & loved it as it didn't have the side effects like most do.......

some that i have been on are: stilnox, mogodon, serapax (sedative-helps you relax-stronger than valium) mirtazapine-for mild sleep disturbance, and currently seroquel. seroquel is a class 8 drug here in australia, for me to get it my doc has to put me down as having schizophrenia. this is it's primary use, although it is the only thing that gets me of to sleep, well the majority of the time. it is an anti-psychotic. and i am on a very high dose. jamie. hoping this helps.

seroquel is great but the weight gain is life changing…i to cant fall asleep without it..when i dont have any i have to take like 300mg of the over the counter sleep aid..and that doesnt really work i stay upp all night and sleep alll day like 12-14 hours and everything i do wont change it….

hi smithgerry, welcome to the forum. no seroquel=no sleep. out of the last 6 days i am lucky to have had 2 semi-okay sleeps. i am on a minium of 1200mg. been on it a very long time. the only thing that has definately put me to sleep-and fast was chloyrl hydrate, that was many years ago when i had been awake 5 days straight and extremely psychotic. 2 psychiatrist had to sign for it, was out 5 minutes later. sadly it is a hospital class drug only. cheers, jamie.

I'm on 20mg of Lexapro... I tried Ambien but it made me throw up, so I had to switch back to my over the counter sleeping pill (like tylenol PM without the painkiller) and 2 melatonin supplements. Now that I sleep more, my depression is easier to manage.
