over 50 and depressed

Hi,I just joined the group.  I was hoping to find people over50 that are dealing with depression.I'm 51, and was just diagnosed with major depressaive disorder 4  months ago.

Sorry to hear that you are suffering from depression. I have, as well, since I was 21.

I am 51 too. So there you go, you have people to talk to. Coming here really helps me and I hope that it helps you too. And most of all "WELCOME"!!! I am so happy that you have joined us, but sorry about your depression. I think you will find that you have come to a good place. Keep posting and know that everybody here cares about you.

Welcome to the Depression Forum, regardless of age we are all on here for the same reason as depression doesn't discriminate, so you have come to the right site, we are all friends and like a big family, so again welcome.

I am 56 and have suffered with depression most of my life I think but more severely in the past 10 years. Why don't you tell us about your reasons for your depression and we will all be able to offer our advice.

Hi. I Hope I didn't affend anyone by asking to speak with people over 50. I definately didn't mean to do that! I know depression doesn't discriminate by age but it's just that I thought people over 50 could idetntify with me more. I was wrong and I humbly apoligize. Well, here's my story. I've been married to the same wonderful man for 33 years and have 5 great children! 4 grandchildren. 4 of my children adults, then 13 years later had an oops...who is now 15 and one of the best oopes you can have! Ive had my issues off and on with anxiety and panic throughout my life, occassional mild bouts of depression that passed quickly but 4 months ago was hit by a tornado and knocked down with major depressive disorder! On meds and counseling but hasn't helped. Its amazing what 4 short months can do! Even though my husband and children are very understanding I live with the guilt every second!! I am on dbl from work,cant go back there. I think the stress from my job that i've had for 20 yrs is part of the problem! Dbl is a wopping 50.00/mth! Probably going to lose my house. Already have crediters calling! Doesn't help with the depression! Not sure what to do. Thanks for listening and again please accept my sincere apology.

Hi Car102, Age is not a factor on this forum. I am 60+. I have been here a long time and have made wonderful friends. And writing your feelings helps with the depression. I suffer from anxiety and panic too and work with a therapist who is wonderful. I also have a/d and anti anxiety meds which help. I also have a problem with loneliness. I am living alone for the first time as my oldest son just moved away and my younger son has been on his own many years. You are blessed to have a good husband, children and grandchildren. I would think they would be a great comfort. My sons are my only family and I try not to depend on them too much but I do need their support. I know it must be very hard to not be working and not have that salary. Is your husband working?

Can he help with the bills? I hope you can figure out a way to keep your home. I had worked at a job for 20 yrs and was fired. That was quite a blow. I luckily got another higher paying job but eventually sold my house and am now in my little house which I am hoping to sell next year. Bad real estate market where I live. I want to go to an active retirement community and have my tiny 1 bedroom

apt. Wishing you the best and keep posting. I will always be willing to answer you. And don't apologize about age. We all help each other out whether 20 or senior.

I too am sorry for your situation. I hope that something works out for you and your husband where your house is concerned. I know that this can't be easy for you right now. I am sorry that the meds and counseling aren't working for you. Hopefully that will change, do you feel that you could use a medication adjustment? I would talk to the doctor about that. There are so many different kinds of anti depressants right now. I take three different things for depression and anxiety. I feel I am on a good combination. I have been feeling well for a few years now. I hope that nothing fizzles out on me.

It is very sad about your house, I feel extremely sorry for people in those unfortunate circumstances, have you tried speaking to your lending authority? I don't understand what dbl is as I am not in the US but I am guessing it some sort of workers comp and it isn't much, is that right? If so, I am sorry you are on workers comp.

How lucky you are having 4 granchildren, I am absolutely hanging out to be a grandmother but there is no sign of them on the horizon as yet. I hope you are able to pick yourself up and get past this setback.

I am 62 and although I am diagnosed bipoar, I am almost alwys at the depression side. In a month I can swing from moderate to severe to suicidal depression, only to cycle back to moderate. Thia has gone on for years for me. I have probably tried almost every med in the book. As far as counseling for you...if you have basically seen the same counselor for 4 months and haven't made progress, then it is time for you to look for a new counselor. I am a counselor and my rule of thumb with clients is 6 sessions before I evaluate progress,,,,if we seem to be going nowhere, I talk with my client about it and to see if they feel there has been progress. Then I kind of brainstorm with the client to see if we can nail down the problem of no progress. And sometimes the conclusion we just are not a good "fit" and if they want I will refer them to someone else. Just remember....with a counselor, you arethe consumer, paying for a service. I am so sorry you are having so many difficulties. Losing your house definitely would make your depression worse. You need as much support as possible from people who understand depression. Keep posting and we will be there for you.
