So often Jaiman, people in depression try to self-medicate themselves by using certain foods which are very detrimental to their overall feeling tone. They need to stop using anything containing caffeine or alcohol; both make the illness worse.
See if you can get him to change his diet right away so that he eats more green vegetables and salads, eats less meat, drinks water consistently and avoids white flour products. He should use whole wheat products and avoid use of milk products--cheese, ice cream, butter, sour cream, milk, cream cheese, etc. These foods are very acidic in reaction during digestion and just are not good for adults. It takes about
one week of diet control to begin improvement in feeling tone. By the end of two weeks he should feel much better. Caffeine or alcohol abandonment may take longer to relieve depression symptoms, but he will get better without them in his diet. Aspirin may help somewhat.
Making sure that he takes prescribed medications is important and that he gets his rest. These things I have mentioned are things I was told to do as part of the regimen to control depression.
I hope he feels better soon.
Take care.
