Yes, Sara, I think you're probably secure with the dosage your physician has prescribed, and if it turns out that you develop bipolar
illness in later years avoid taking lithium if you can, although it is still
the preferred medication for bipolar illness. Lithium can cause closure of the tiny arteries in the kidneys and there's nothing doctors can do about
that. A good choice might be Lamictal or Abilify, although Abilify is very expensive.
I would also recommend to you, Sara, that you stop using anything
containing caffeine or alcohol. (My psychiatrist asked me to avoid them because they both make depression worse.) There is a post
today on the bipolar forum to Mike in Maine about
the caffeine problem. Being an advocate of changes in diet, I usually write about
that, but it is also very conspicuous as part of the Anxiety and Panic Forum, as well.
You might be interested in reading an article called ruthwhalen.com She has written more extensively about
this than anyone else I know, and her work is still being recognized as significant.
I have spoken to her about
this, and she has suggested that we try
to communicate the message to everyone with depression or bipolar illness to stop the use of caffeine. (The psychiatrist recommended to
stop the use of alcohol.) The choice, of course, is always personal and
depends on what you want to accomplish.
I noticed today that Skitt, on the Anxiety Forum, has posted an excellent thread on the diet. It's on today's posts if you're interested.
Hope you're feeling better very soon.
Best wishes,
