Husband just started 50mg Sertaline

My husband went to the doctor last week and started sertaline 50mg. He seems much better already although I know that it has not been long enough for it to take effect. He has recently just come home after a two week separation to deal with his depression without the added stress of a home, wife, and child. I am trying to make things as easy for him as possible right now. However I do not know if that is the right thing to do or not.    What changes should I expect to see from the medicine?

I am not too familiar with sertaline, but a better mood over all is what I would expect. It is possible that it is starting to work early, and hopefully will get better. I think making things easy is good and then gradually get him back in the swing of regular life stress things, you know, everyday life. It isn't easy for some. But we have to face it as it happens.

I hope that you and your husband get on good. Hopefully somebody who is familiar with this medication can share with you what has worked for them and how it effected them.

I just looked it up and it is zoloft.  It helped me, but gave me diarrhea.  But for mood it was great.  I hope it works for your husband.

Hey.

I was on Sertraline a couple of months back and it really helped me greatly. What you have to remember is antidepressants affect people differently - it helps some, doesn't help others. The positive effects I felt were having more energy, made me think about my future more, made me have more motivation and determination, and just generally helped me cope with depression.

Unfortunately after a good period of weeks, I experienced a manic episode and had to come off the medication - but I am sure this wont happen to your husband. One thing I would say is keep an eye on him - these first few weeks are crucial. If you notice any strange behaviour, do call the doctor and inform him so he can adjust his dose.

I can't add anything to what the others have said about Zoloft. I was on it years ago and it worked for a while before I had to move on to another med. I will add, though , that your husband is very lucky to have your support. He's also lucky to have a home and a family to come home to. If home is a stress for him, maybe you could try couples or family counseling to help you all better know how to deal with his having this illness. Just remember to be good to yourself too.

Thanks for the responses. He does seem to be really energetic. He went from sitting on the couch being very closed off and shut down to being up and ready to take on home remodeling projects and calling me in the middle of the day just to say HI!

I just did not know if this was normal or not. He used to be like this when I met him, but that has been 10 years ago. I am still trying to adjust to the mood change.

I am not complaining, just fear that this extreme high could be followed by an extreme low.

I want to try family counseling. We were going to marriage counseling which is what helped my husband realize he was fighting depression. I think that family counseling might be a better option right now to focus on his recovery and my recovery of dealing with this disease for the past year, versus marriage counseling.

I just did not want to spring it on him yet. Still trying to give him his space. Maybe in a month or so.

I think that the new mood is good. There are going to be not so good days, but that is normal. Enjoy it while it lasts. Hopefully it will continue. Try not to worry about it ending and him crashing. I think the zoloft is working for him. I am very happy for you.

Keep posting. I think family counseling is a good idea.
