  I think my neice might be showing signs of disassociation. I've done some research on the internet but despite some odd behavior I really don't know how many of the symptoms she actually has. My husband and I are very worried. Do you have any advice?

  Oh, and I'm sorry for posting this here but I wasn't sure where to post it. I would really appreciate any help you can give me.

MY MERE SUGGESTION IS FOR TO SEE A DR FOR A ASSESSMENT.
FROM THIS POINT MANY THINGS CAN HAPPEN IN DEVISING A
TREATMENT PLAN.........IE, MEDICATION, THERAPIST AND PSYCHIATRIST.
NOTE THE behaviour AND MONITOR. PLEASE CONSULT A DR ASAP.

We thought about that, but you see she's my brother's daughter. They live with my husband and I. I've tried talking to him about it but he refuses to listen and I know my neice would refuse to see a dr about it anyways. I'm certainly going to do what I can though. Thank you for the advice.

I would talk to her parents about it, as that is their responsibility, depending on her age. If she is on her own, I would talk to her and get her to see a doctor or a counselor. Hopefully it can be caught early.

I wish you the best with this, about the only thing you can do is encourage her to go to a doctor. That would be a place to start.

My neice is 17. I wondered if she was just being a teenager and that was my orginal idea. But I'm just not so sure.
Her brother sexually abused her when she was little. I've read that traumatic events like that can casue disassocation.

It can cause her disassociation. But let's hope not for her. If you can safely suggest counseling, it would be good.

I've tried to talk to her and her dad but both refuse to do anything. I'm very worried about her. I have a sneaking suspicion she might be cutting as well but I don't know. I'm going to keep trying and so is my husband but we aren't sure how much good it will do.

All you can really do is be supportive of her and hope that she comes to you when she's ready to get help.

Keep the situation feeling safe for her to come and talk to you. I think that is about the best that you can do.

I agree with Karen, until she hits a crisis point and ends up in a hospital and has to get help: the best and only thing you can do is show that you love and support her.

I know is must be feeling impossible for you and your husband, but if she sees a port in her storm she might just come to you. A lot of people never had a place to go. She does, she just does not know it yet. She most likely will realize it, try to be patient.

I'm trying to be patient. It's so difficult because I just want to help her. I don't want the same thing to happen to her that happened to my sister. I never did anything to help my sister but now I can make up for that mistake by helping my neice.
And I am almost certain she's cutting. I called a few places and I'm planning on talking to her again. I hope it works. Wish me luck.
