Getting through the holidays...

This can really be a hard time of the year for many of us with depression. I think that this would be a good thread to discuss that and try to help each other through it.

Many of us are stressed, many of us are lonely. Taking it one day at a time helps. Planning ahead helps too. Some of us lack money. That makes it incredibly hard during this time of year. Maybe making gifts would solve the problem, I made a lot of mine.

I hope you all share here what tips you have to get through the holidays and what is hard for you...

The holidays have been very stressful in the past for me. Not having money, weather problems, and just plain trying to make it through. I do find mindfulness helps and taking life a day at a time. Try not to worry about the future of it. And if things don't work out, we have to realize it isn't the end of the world for us...

Keep hanging in there, keep coming here and relying on each other to get through...

Very helpful tips.

For some reason, I'm not looking forward to the holidays this year. My boyfriend and co-workers are telling me I'm the Grinch this year.
For me, I think the challenge is because I have not progressed from last year. I feel like I'm in the same place. Making a plan and writing it out may be a first step. After which I can take the next step of executing it.

Thanks for starting this. The holidays have become hard for me. But ya know what? I'd rather be alone than be where I was last year.

UA- I know that feeling. BUT, you may be in 'observation' mode. Life is so short UA. It is time for you to find yourself. Time for you to find out your likes and dislikes. Time to decide what makes you happy. You care and help so many people that I worry about YOU. Take time for YOU.

I just got back from a student's house. She makes pies and donates the money to build water wells in Africa. I thought this was a small operation. She sold 216 pies!!! That touched my heart!

I am sure I will back to visit this thread!!!!

Michele: That's very nice of your student. I like when people do nice things that makes a difference no matter how small it is. It is greatly appreciated even though they may not know it.

Many people, when they go somewhere for celebrations, feeling a anti climatic depression when they arrive back home. Especially if they person lives alone.

Once way to get past this is to have a pet, like a dog who is very interactive. this of course is a personal choice.

Making calls to people far away to wish them a nice Holiday is another, Start writing Holiday cards, put music on and do a favorite activity such as painting drawing, journaling, reading etc...

The sun is out here for a change this am. Hope you have some sun in your day today.

Trina: thank you for the advice... I'm still feeling kinda depressed... when we went to Denny's, a family came in for dinner. it reminded me that my family didn't want me for Thanksgiving...

I will start volunteering again. puppies and especially big dogs always make me smile.
