I don't think there is such a thing as 'over planning' a garden. I think the 'mistake' is NOT planning! I've learned the hard way to pay attention to the plant tag as to not just water and sun needs but also the mature size of the plant! I've also discovered that just because the tag says 'dwarf', if it likes the conditions, it will probably grow bigger.
I've been busy switching things around in my garden. Bringing in more 'native' plants and giving away ones that need alot of maintenance to younger gardeners. A bit more hardscaping to do, too. This way, I won't need to drag out the lawn mower. The 'plan' is for pavers with spaces in between for some creeping thyme. That way I'll have green, but it won't need mowing and my chair legs will stop sinking into the dirt.
I dragged two of my large pots from the back yard into the front yard. Combined with the other large planters I was able to put garden hooks into them and string lights around the table and chairs. So, now I have 2 chartreuse planters with day lilies in them and 2 blue planters, one with a japanese maple and the other with an andromeda bush, standing at the corners of the seating area. I sat out there last evening as it was quite warm. The amber lights, the sound of the fountain, crickets just beginning to chirp...so relaxing!
I also made sure to devote some time to the kitchen redo. I was able to get the last 4 tiles off of the countertop and clean up all of the adhesive. Next up, digging out the old caulk, recaulking, a bit of paint and laying the new tiles. Whew! This wasn't such a big project in my mind!!!
