drive in fairly similar conditions, and we both know how much safer
we are with studs. Nobody wants to encounter black ice without
studs...

Wow Lynnwood, I just took some chicken noodle soup out of the freezer. I need to get it thawed. I also need to make another batch. I make gallons and freeze it. It is always so good on a cold day.

I am sorry about the laryngitis. That is never fun. It is hard not to talk for me. Ha,

Mornin' everyone!

I had a weird and wacky weekend. My furnace pooped out on Saturday while it was -26C (-15F to you yanks). So the F27 family snuggled under blankets in front of the fireplace while we waited for 'the man'. Four hundred bucks and 10 hours later, we were all toasty again.

Sunday was a fun political rally. There were about 1000 people, and it was standing room only. Great speakers, great audience, but YEESH is my back sore. I can't stand for 5 hours straight anymore.

We get long dark days here too and I agree, just having all the lights on doesn't cut it. I've added a few more tools to my toolbox...a 'full spectrum' light lamp, 'forcing' bulbs into bloom indoors, air fresheners that smell like fresh cut grass or lavender, dishwashing liquid that smells like tangerines or grapefruit and an electric fireplace. When I use the last, I burn a candle from Signature Soy, scented as "Weathered Oak".

I turn the lights out from east to west, as the sun would move, thereby creating my own 'sunset'.

I sometimes burn a candle that smells like suntan lotion while listening to a sound machine set on 'ocean waves' while having my full spectrum lamp turned my way.

I take vitamin D supplements in the cold weather months, usually October to May.

Try to 'exercize' all of your senses. Whatever I associate with summer, I can recreate for the most part, indoors in winter. Touch, terrycloth robe or make armchair arm covers made out of a hand towel. Taste, go ahead and put barbeque sauce on your burger, eat citrus or watermelon, etc. See, lights, posters, movies, etc. Smell, air fresheners, candles. Hear, get a sound machine or a c.d. with beachy, ocean sounds or Beach Boys music, etc.

Plants can fit several of these catagories, smell, touch, see. They are also great for cleaning the air when the house is closed up against the cold. Just don't have them near the bed. While they take in carbon dioxide during the day and emit oxygen, the opposite is true at night. Having them near the bed depleats the available oxygen and can cause problems with sleeping/breathing at night.

Here is a tip for those who have laryngitis but need their voice--at least for a bit.

Honey and milk products coat the vocal folds--and do no good. But if you need to speak--at least for a bit--use lemon juice. The citric acid will 'shock' (temporarily reduce the swelling of) the folds--and they will be able to block outgoing air enough to produce sound. It won't last long, maybe three hours tops. I always did 1/3 lemon juice to 2/3 water.

I have just ended a 3 day head cold. Weather can not make up its mind here.

I will take some snow, turns to rain by time it hits the east coast what is that about!!

Tree is not up yet. Working on the holiday spirit thing.

Since my nephew won't be returned to my sister, we'll just have a quiet Christmas. It just won't feel right.

We do have to try to look at the good things. There will always be not so good things going on. But if we only focus on that, we will be depressed all the time.

Hopefully your nephew will be in a warm place for the holidays. We can only do so much. So let's try to make the best of things.

It isn't always easy but with practice, it can be done...

I tend to take all the positive stuff out of the holidays and ignore the rest. Best part of the holidays for me? Time off and getting to sleep in.

And I love sitting in the living room with all the lights off and meditating on the tree. Cat in lap, warm tea, mood music. All great.
