Hi everyone,

I am new to HealingWell and actually to forums altogether. I was just wondering if there is anyone out there who is on Zyprexa. I started it about 1 month ago and have since gained 14 pounds. It worked for my mood at first but it makes me eat a lot. Since my weight gain my mood has gone down sufficiently and now I feel worse than when I started the med. Since this is about the 20th type of medication i have tried I am really starting to lose hope that I will find something that works for me. All I have been doing for the last 2 weeks is sleeping. I have stopped taking the med and have since been very agitated and angry. All I do is cry when I am awake. I hate being awake.

Hi evening,  Welcome to healing well forum,  we are happy to have you.  Zyprexa is an Antipsychotic medication often used for Bipolar Disorder and or Schizophrenia...I am not saying you have these disorders mind you, this is just what the med is normally prescribed for.  Most of the medications in this class of drugs do cause people to gain weight rapidly as you have described, but this usually tapers off after a few weeks of being on them and your body adjusts to the med.  You said that it worked for your mood "at first" but it "made you eat alot"...is the weight gain the reason you stopped taking the medication? I would also ask if your taking any other medication, or antidepressants/antipsychotic medications?  If your not, and you just stopped taking the Zyprexa on your own then you could be having some withdraw side effects from stopping depending on the dosage you were taking.  Or if you do have Bipolar Disorder (which I don’t know) than you could be going though a manic episode right now.  Either way you need to call your physician that prescribed that medication and notify them of what is going on.  Try to get an appointment to be seen.  Please do let us know how it goes.  We are always here...so feel free to continue to post....Take care

Hey,

My nephew was on Zyprexa for about a year.  He gained 80 pounds in about the first 6 months... and lost it all after being off of zyprexa about 4 months.

He was like a zombie on this stuff, but his personality did return eventually after he'd been off the stuff for maybe 6 months.

Yeah,
I have an appointment with my doc in a few days. I have to find a new med. My mood is all over the place and I eat everything in sight.

I took this stuff to counter act my manic episode on paxil. It knocked me out hard. I could actually go to bed and sleep for a good 8-10 hours on this stuff compared to my usual sleep of about 4-6 hours waking once or twice sometimes more. Could nap during the day as well. It made me very hungry, I was literally a bottemless pit, though I didnt take it long enough to really see any huge weight increase, just noticed I had a new addiction to food.
