Do current events in the news ever get to you?

Yeh!!!! My daughter once wrote a beautiful poem for school. They had to pick a topic and write a poem that showed both sides of an issue. Her poem was about her guilt at being safe while the rest of the world was in chaos that America was responsible for. Very powerful!

I think the issue is to choose our battles, be aware of what we can change and what we cannot change and then continue to walk forward being the best people that we can.

Plenty of people on the last news report popping up to say how stupid not being able to take water onto the plane is ... blah, blah, moan, moan. -- I think they're missing the point: it's not actual water bottles that are the problem, but water bottles being used as containers for other stuff. I'd rather give up a bottle of water, put my shoes in my luggage, and anything else required, than risk getting myself and everyone else blown up because security "let some things go".

Here's another funny story for you. -- At the height of security alerts in the US, I was travelling to LA from GB. I set the beeper off this end with my tin of Vaseline lip balm. I meant to put it in my hand luggage by the other side so that I didn't hold things up and worry anyone ... but a long-haul flight later I'd forgotten about it entirely. Of course I set vthe beeper off again. Without even thinking about what I was doing I reached into my jacket pocket to retrieve the offending item, saying "Oh, that's my lip balm..." -- as I did so several well-armed soldiers reached for their weapons. Now read what I said again, allowing for how "balm" sounds to an American ear.... I was lucky not to get shot!!

I was scared watching the news today.  I don't want to even imagine what it could have been like.  I can't watch too much of the news as it does get me down.

Have been watching the news this morning.  It scares me the thought of going on holiday.  I wish this wasn't happening.  I know what you mean though - you can't help but watch it.

    I am usually in the Fibromyalgia site.  I wanted to read here this morning. 

    I wanted to share that the news definately gets to me also.  If I don't watch then I am without important information.  I could choose that, but I always have felt that the better informed and/or educated we are, the better.  So I choose to watch.  I try to be happy about the positive stories.  Sometimes it is not easy.  Especially when animals and children are being compromised...I pray alot!

    As far as CounterClockwise, I LOVE your name.  Makes me giggle.  Guess I can "relate"!  lol 

    You had mentioned the airport experience.  I had to laugh.  I worked there for a few years.  Too funny.  And about the fish....Did "they" even mention the fish?  From what I remember, they should have.  Hope they even "noticed" it! <--scary, but it happens!

    Well be happy with all the knowlege and experiences that God has picked for us!  That is our only hope in this world and that is through Him.

   

My son and I are flying to Phoenix . Al-Queda was targeting international flights so the chances of anything happening on my flight are pretty low. I am unpacking my chapstick, my eye solution, my glasses cleaner, my perfume, ..... I will not take my cell phone nor will either my son and I take music equipment or computers. When I check in at the airport I always wear close fitting clothes and take off any coats or overshirts that fit loosely. I have absolutely no problem with any of this because the life that these measures save may be my daughters (she flies frequently) or the life of someone I love.

Joan, I don't think it is just New York, it just happened to be accessible and they knew it would make a big impact on America and the world. You have to remember that the people doing this are fanatics. They took a pascafist (SP?) religion and twisted and warped it into something that hates so much that people kill themselves in its worship.

I was teaching 1st grade on 9/11. The kids were at recess when the towers fell and I was watching it live on TV. In my classroom (on the west coast) I had 6 children who lost grandparents, brothers, uncles and parents. After the towers fell the principal immediately ordered that all TVs would be off for the remainder of the day so that it would not get back to the kids about what had happened. Parents were stopped at the office and children who were going home were escorted to the office as if they had doctor appointments so that we could keep things calm. My classroom was like a zombie for weeks. Some of the kids were grieving right away because they knew relatives did not survive, some were in shock waiting for news that would never come. The best and the worst day was the third day when news came that the brother of one student had been found in the rubble. Everyone was so excited but immediately realized that there would be no happy endings for the 6 others who were still hoping and waiting. Having seen a happy ending gave them hope and tore them apart. We loved each other through those first terrible weeks and the rest of the year.

It is okay to feel what you feel about the "situation". Terrible people were trying to do terrible things to so many. Thank goodness for Scotland Yard and all the people who put an end to the plot. We are all strong enough to continue forward day by day.

Yes, it is enveloping everyone. Luckily I still talk to one of my co-workers from the Trade Center and there is someone else who she knows who is also alive. I also do e-mails with friends from New York City.

Recently they wanted to down New York City, Washington, D.C., Boston, Chicago, Atlanta, Miami and Los Angeles. Actually I think they want to kill us all! It is very scarey but I am doing better on being able to sleep yet am having heavy-duty nightmare/dreams.

There were a number of other terrorist plots when I live in New York City which were very frightening. Now I am living in upstate New York.
