I have never post here before but hope you can help me.  I have crohns disease and the last few months have gotten pretty depressed over my medical condition. My doctor wants me to try Cymbalta. 

Has anyone taken it and did you get any side effects?  I read that weight gain and constipation are side effects, neither of which i  really want to experience.  Thanks

Hi. I have colon inertia and megacolon and just had eight and a half feet of colon removed with the rest resectioned so I didn't need a bag. I think I can therefore relate a little to Crohn's sufferers for right now my remaining small bowel is in spasm constantly and it is inflamed and all twisted.

I do not know about Cymbalta, but I would be careful with whatever you take if it affects your bowels. I would be careful about taking any medication that is constipating. Taking a medication that exacerbates your Crohn's is bound to make you feel worse mentally and physically.

I have met Crohn's sufferers that get relief from various medications. I hope your doctor can get you on one that relieves your symptoms and lets you function with some quality in your life.

I do not even know what Cymbalta is; an antidepressant??? There are plenty out there that do not constipate you.

Anyway, good luck in finding the right one and in managing your Crohn's. My surgeon says he can do no more for me with meds or surgery so I am stuck this way forever with twisted, inflamed, and spasming intestines. I know I get pretty discouraged some days, so I can completely relate to how you would be feeling depressed yourself.

Let me know how you make out if you can.

Hi prof, Cymbalta is the newest antidepressant on the market and to reach FDA approval.  It is proving to have some of the least side effects than any of the other antid's out there now.  I havent taken it but, many here have posted positive feedback regarding it.  It is going to be difficult to tell if you will have any side effects from taking an antidepressant regardless of what it may be.  This is because each of us reacts differantly to these classes of medications and they work differantly for each of us.  What works for me may not work for you type thing and my negative side effects from a med you may not have at all. 

If you do decide to take it please do post again and let us know how it works for you.  I also hope you get some members who have taken this to post to let you know how it has worked for them so you have some ideas of perhaps what to expect...Take care

I was on it for a few weeks..if anything for me, I had diarea, but my ears have been ringing non-stop. I do feel better emotionally. However, after being here I have/had more symptoms of Lymes than depression..long story.
Anyway, no constipation- did gain some weight, but that was due to moving to Ohio from sunny CA. and not getting out as much---a 1/2 gallon of ice cream every other day doesn't help either.
