Hi everyone I am visiting from the Crohn's Board :) I have a question about Celexa my doctor just gave me a prescription for this. He said it would help me to taper down on my percocets a little since they heighten the effect of the percocets. I was reading on drugs.com though that taking percocets with anti-depressants like Celexa can cause serious sedation if that's the case why the heck would he give them to me? Im a little hesitant to trust what doctors tell me I have had bad experiences with doctors. Im also hoping that the Celexa will help the depression i've had due to the Crohn's and other things in my life. I've never been on any anti-depressants before. I did take Pamelor for a few days but it gave me a horrible headache so I quit taking it. Im a little worried about the side effects with Celexa. Also what is the difference between Celexa and Lexapro is one better then the other? Sorry for the all the questions! Thanks!

Celexa and Lexapro are both SSRI's but Lexapro also works on noradrenaline I think so is a bit better for anxiety. Some doc's say there is no difference between the two. Try not to worry about the side effects too much, some people don't experience any but if you do, they usually go away within a couple of weeks. I'm not sure of the effect taking these will have with the pain meds, if I were you I would talk to your pharmacist if you are worried. They willl be able to answer those questions for you. Let us know how you get on taking these.

Thanks I wonder why my Dr didn't put me on Lexapro? He said that the Celexa would help with depression and anxiety. I guess I will just have to see how it goes but im going to ask my pharmacist about the drug interaction with pain meds before i start taking them. That has me a little concerned. Thanks again! :)

I know that the drug companies are trying to sell they products but the product information on Lexapro says that it is the next generation from Celexa and it is better tolerated than Celexa and therefore more effective. Although Celexa and Lexapro are related, they are not stricty the same. I take Lexapro and have had wonderful results and no side effects. Hubby just started taking Celexa and has been nauseous since he started. Hubby always tends to be very sensative to any sort of medication

Lexapro (escitalopram) is a cleaner, improved version of Celexa (citalopram). It is the active isomer of racemic citalopram. Lexapro has a lower rate of side effects and sometimes is more effective than Celexa. There have been clinical studies comparing escitalopram and citalopram. On this site http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/ you can find clinical trials. The main advantage of Celexa over Lexapro is generic availability.

Hi, I too have crohn's, depression and anxiety.  The depression came first though for me.  I have been on Celexa for a few years now, I also take Remeron for depression.  I do not take pain killers for the crohn's but I would talk to your pharmacist about the drugs, that's who I ask.  I have taken Lexapro but my doctor switched me to Celexa.

Many psychiatrists believe Lexapro does not confer any particular advantages over Celexa in terms of side effects or effectiveness. There may have been some statistical separation in the initial approval studies, but clinically this has not been shown to make much of a difference.
