Replacement for Effexor

I was on 150 mg/day of Effexor from February 2004 until January 2007. I stopped taking it because it was making me sick to my stomach, and also I came down with ulcerative colitis. The colitis is probably unrelated to the Effexor, but I thought it was hard on my system so I stopped taking it.

My depression has been getting worse the past two weeks, and I wondered what would be a good replacement for Effexor. Before Effexor, I tried Prozac, but it made me sleep 18 hours a day, so I didn't like it.

Effexor didn't work so well for me. My doctor switched me to wellbutrin and I had very good results.

There are so many different types of meds out there. The only one that can really answer your question here is your doctor. They are probably going to be very careful because of your illness.

I took Effexor 75mg for 3 years and about 2 months ago my doctor switched me to Cipralex 10 mg. I can't say if my depression is necessarily any better, but my head feels less foggy at least - I always felt quite fuzzy on Effexor. Fortunately it was an easy transition from one med to the other - I didn't notice any withdrawals or anything. But your doctor will definitely know what's best for you. Good luck!
