Getting off of zyprexa

Hi,
I have been taking olanzapine (zyprexa) for about 7 months now. I wondered if anyone knows how you can withdraw safely from this medication. I have been taking 2.5mg nightly for 7 months. In the last week I have been taking 2.5mg every second night. How long should I continue with this before I cut back even further to 2.5mg every third night. Any help???

Are you doing this under a doctor's care? You need to be careful with any type of antidepressant when you cut down your dosages. If you have not contacted your doctor,I would do so asap.

You definetly want to wean down. I was on 10mg when my pdoc said it would be okay to get off cold turkey, I was on it about 5 weeks. I don't ever want to do that again, the side effects were nasty.

Take your time and let your body adjust to the doses being lowered, and take it from there. Do not rush the prossess, and best wishes!

Hi Ebony,  Your taking a very low dosage of Zyprexa but still this is a very powerful medication...I really hope you have the suggestions/advice of your prescribing physician regarding dosage stoppage.  Either way it sounds as if your going about it the smart way.  If your wanting to go off of it, continuing to gradually lengthen the days in-between you taking it will help greatly when your finally ready to stop it.  Again I would seek the advice of your physician before completely stopping it.  Please do post again and let us know how it goes for you.  Take care

Thanks everyone for your replies. Thanks Shy for the website. Very informative. I am withdrawing from Zyprexa under doctors orders, but forgot as soon as I walked out the door how many days he said to cut down the medication for before cutting down even further. Will take my time doing it. Am having no bad side effects at all so far by doing this. Feeling good still.Am still taking Lovan for depression, so am hoping to have no trouble getting off Zyprexa. Will keep you informed.
