quick question seriousness of depression

has anyone been so depressed that they were housebound? i feel i am in this state now, i only leave the house when i need to.

Hi Eli,

Yes I have been that depressed. I wouldn't even answer the door or the phone. I just wanted to be alone. Sometimes it is good to go with it for a while. But if it really bothers you, try taking short walks each day. Even if it is just for five minutes at a time. Gradually it will become easier to get yourself out of the house.

I think that it is important that you talk to your doctor about this. It sounds like it is not a normal thing for you. But there are times we just need to rest our minds and allow ourselves to be secluded, but not for a long time. I spent two years in bed due to depression and fibromyalgia. It gets old, and I did too. You are missing out on a lot of life. And life is short. The older that you get, the faster that it goes by. So you might want to get on some medication to help you. Just don't beat yourself up over it. It is normal for depression.

Yeah, i go to work and come home and thats it. I turn down any offers to go out, i feel safe and secure in my own room

I have spent many years hiding at home and still do to this day .
Firstly i really didn`t notice it or even think about it until i started to have panic attacks wheni did go out .
Going to the supermarket was indeed ever so hard .Even taking a shopping list with me was no help at all .As all i could think about was just getting home as quickly as possible .
I hid behind my children and those who i cared for once mine grew up any excuse was a good excuse in my books as to why i had to stay home.
In the end i would leave all the shopping for hubby to do on his days off i would make up an excuse as to why i could not go No one ever knew anything about it but being at home i was in my comfort zone.
The only way i realised just how bad it was came when i was admitted to hospital for cancer treatment and as a result of that treatment i recieved some great psych help .
Now twelve months down the track i can go out but i still fight it all the time .
If you are concerned as to how this is effecting your quality of life then please talk to your dr or someone about it as it`s so hard to deal with the longer it is left .

Yes Eli,

I would get so anxious at the thought of leaving home I would cry and then fall deeper into the hole.

If I left home all I could think about was getting back to my safe space. You are not alone.
