Support Group Tonight

There is a support group that I can attend tonight, but I am anxious. Can anyone share their experiences?

I don't know if I'm ready to share my stuff with a group of strangers.

 It is a DBSA(Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance) group.

My advice would be to just go and see how it is. I have never been to a support group before, but I thought there is no need to open yourself unless you want to. With depression groups, I think this is a general rule.
Anyway, having contact can be important, though you should decide for yourself in the end. But there has to be a first time!

I agree with Erik,

You can always go and just kind of listen. It is healthy exposure for you. I hope that you like it. Tell us all about it when you get done. I am anxious to see how this turns out.

Hey there, just go and see what it is about, you never have to tell anyone your personal thoughts unless you choose too.

Is the meeting run by a leader, a dedicated leader and structured.............that seems to be what most people need.

If you get really upset, then get up and leave, it is alright to check it out and change your mind.

Thanks for your responses. The meeting is a few hours away, so I just won't let the anxiety build up. My mom is going with me, as it is open to friends and family as well. It is peer-run, no therapist. I also went to a CBT group last week, but it is a 12 week program and it was week 11, so they were doing advanced CBT stuff. Week 1 starts again next week, so I will be going to that. I still do not have the resources to get 1 on 1 therapy, as i have no insurance, but I am looking forward to getting all the therapy I need.

I will surely let you know how it goes.

Hi Eli, I have attended DSBA support groups in my area.  They are very nice people who attend and they will listen and try to offer you suggestions for possible help.  They have a lot of literature you can take to read.  Keep in mind that some of the people who go are parents of bipolar children ( usually adult children)  and they go to the meetings to find out how to handle different situations with their chidren.  I would defininetly go and see what it is all about.  They usually have everyone introduce themselves and say why they have come.  I have found the meetings very helpful and very supportive.  So do go. If you decide it's not for you at least you have given it a chance.  By the way this is a nationwide organization.  You cal also look them up online. Hope this helps.  Be sure to let us know how it goes. One more mention, Eli, you do not have to talk if you don't want.  All you really have to do is introduce yourself.  And yes , these groups are run by someone who is the leader for the group, usually someone who has been doing this for a long time.  Good Luck!

I could not bring myself to go. :( i could not find the strength :( there is a group on thursday, maybe that will be the one i go to.
