I have a question that someone may be able to help me with. I was wondering if the depression is caused from long periods of stress and the serontonin levels cant levels cant replenish themselves with lack of rest. When the stress is removed does the body catch up with the proper levels. The reason I ask is the weeks my wifes school loads were lighter she seemed a lot more pleasant to be around. She has 3 weeks left and she is done and I dont see any chance of counseling until she is done but it is killig me . This week she is pulling all niters writing papers and I am just taking care of my son and staying away.It is really hard not to take it personal because I am doing so much to try to make things easier for and if Im lucky I hear aan occasional thanks ,very occasional.I love my wife and trying to just hang in there.

Hi Cowboy up,
Try to bare with your wife until she is done. I know that it is hard, but this has to be so important for the both of you. I would hate to see you give up now.
I am not sure how to answer your question. I guess it depends if the depression is situational or not. If it is situational, the situation is causing the stress. When the stress leaves the person usually gets better. But if it is a chemical imbalance, than the person needs medication to adjust it.
You will be able to tell when things slow down and your wife isn't under so much stress. If she gets better than you know that it was just situational. If not, then she needs to stay on medication. I know this really isn't answering your quesion, but it is the best that I can do for now.
But I think that the seratonin levels are related to stress in some situations. In others where it is hereditary, well, I think that medication is the best route to go. I have to be on medication for the rest of my life, though I can say that stress effects my level of depression. It would add to it so to speak.
I hope that this helps you some. I hope that you are having a good day/night.
Hugs, Karen

Hi Cowboy,
I can't really add to Karen's comments on the seratonin levels, but I do want you to stay strong and hold onto your faith during this tough time. I understand that three weeks before the end of school must seem like a terribly long time when you're struggling day to day. However, you have pulled through this for a long time now, and there is light ahead. I pray that the burdens will be lighter soon, and that your wife will get some counseling when she is through this school session. Please stick with it, and stick with us. Seeing what a devoted husband and father you are is undoubtedly a miracle in some readers' lives as they follow your story. May God give you even greater strength as you continue on.

cowboy, I wondered about
the same thing regarding serotonin levels during levels of stress. since the past 2 months have been horrible for me, I was wondering if my brain needs time to balance it all out. i'm sure your wife will get better after this stressful semester. God bless.
