My story starts May 17, 2008 when i met my current boyfriend at a party..he was 19 and i was 15..we started talking and all, then..i find out about 5 months later he is related to me he is like my 3rd or 4th cousin..we kept going out after we found out but it was awkward so we decided to break up..we each get a new partner but we realize we love each other, we get back together and then my family found out like about a month ago..they immediately disagree and strictly prohibit me seeing him. nono . i started lying to my parents saying i was going with friends but i got caught. My boyfriend is now 21 and i am 17 so my mom threatened me that if i kept seeing him she was going to press charges against him for me being a minor..i have been sad ever since i don't like lying to my parents but i don't know what else i should do i wish they would jst accept him and let us be. sad

This is a very hard situation. Especially being that you are shirttail cousins. I don't know what the consequences of this could be. You will be 18 soon. So maybe you should try to wait this out. If he loves you, he will understand. You don't want your mom pressing charges against him as this will be on his record for life. And he could possibly go to jail or prison depending on how far you have gone sexually.

Hopefully others will come along with their opinions. Be careful with this situation. Take care hon.

Good Morning,

I am sorry to hear of your situation and I agree, you are almost 18 so it may be wise to wait on making any permanent decisions right now.

From what I have read:

A brother/sister share 1/2 the genes

1st cousins share 1/8 the genes

2nd cousins share 1/32 the genes

3rd cousins share 1/128 the genes

We only have 46 chromosomes. In other words, most 3rd cousins, as long as there was no previous incest, share no  chromosomes and are not really related in any significant manner.

However that being said I would seek out the opinion of a genetic counselor to get  expert advise seeing as this is causing you and your parent's problems.  

You have been advised well so please know we care about you.
