I am totally new to this site and am so glad to have found it. I have severe depression/ anxiety /panic attacks and am totally medication resistant. I have tried every medication from A to Z and nothing has worked for me. My doctor has told me that he has come down to his last resort and that is electro shock treatments before I do something desperate.
Has anyone here had ECT and can you tell me what it was like both while going through it and afterward when you come home from the hospital? I know there will be memory loss but what is it like when you wake up from it and just how much memory will be lost? I am afraid that if I don't go through it I will do something desperate so I really need input and all my doctor will say is that it is very successful and that I will only lose short term memory for a short time. Any input would be appreciated as I am desperate.

Hi Opaqueblues,

I have never had ect myself but we do have a member who has. I am sure that he will post to you when he comes on line.

It sounds like ect can be the only thing left. I am sure that it will work for you. I am sorry that medications do not work.

SO BENEFICIAL. SOME MINOR S/E. BUT YOU COP THAT TO BE BETTER.

DURING FUZZY HEAD AND SOME MINOR MEMORY LOSS. SOME DISASSOCIATION. HOME, IT PASSES. TAKES A LITTLE TIME. SOME MINOR MEMORY AND FUZZINESS, BUT IT GETS MUCH BETTER. IT DOES DEPEND ON HOW MANY TREATMENTS AS WELL. A COURSE IS 6. CAN BE DONE UNI-POLAR OR ON BOTH, DEPENDANT ON THE SEVERITY. HOPING THIS HELPS. JAMIE

MEMORY LOSS IS MINOR, AND ON THE SHORT TERM STUFF. I ALWAYS AWOKE AFTER EACH TREATMENT AND SAID TO THE NURSE 'AM I NEXT'-THE REPLY WAS OH SWEETIE YOU HAVE ALREADY BEEN DONE!!! CHEERS, JAMIE

90% of people do reinstate there meds after ect. jamie. some not straight away. jamie. i have had worse s/e on some meds than ect.

ie. largactil-massive s/e. olanzapine, xanax, lexapro-massive, luvox, seroquel, cymbalta withdrawal-nasty. jamie
