computer has crashed. part fixed many viruses

fixed. many probs. fire-wall went, many bugs crept in. happened posting on hw 2 nights ago. had 2 shut it down. am back, less in the wallet........and it caused my much anxiety over security and stuff. cheers, jamie

Jamie, you don't have to fork out for expensive virus scanners. Microsoft security essentials (MSE) and Avast work really good and are free. I've never had a virus with either, it's just I found Avast a bit too noisy, so am now using MSE instead. There's also a program called Stinger which is free from McAfee, you can install it to a USB stick and run it if a virus is stopping you from running your normal virus scanner. Paid for virus scanners tend to include a lot of bloatwear which can slow your computer down. I'm against the paid for ones because of this, and because of the fact the free ones work just aswell. Also if you're using your computer in a normal way, Windows own firewall is sufficient for keeping your computer safe.

Juat wanted to say hello. I hope you and Jamie are both having a good day. I am going to get the norton antivirus. I just got a new computer and I got it free for 60 days. So I think I will continue with it this time if it isn't too expensive. I had maleware. It is free. But want to make sure I am protecting my computer.

Do you recommend norton?

Yes, I think Norton is excellent. My psychiatrist's husband is an
executive banker and he uses Norton for the Bank's systems and has
never had a problem.

I dropped Norton because I was advised by a computer specialist
that AVG kept things really in excellent condition with your computer;
you have to update it every couple of days, though, since new viruses are out there daily.

Norton is the standard, I believe.

No, Wallaby, AVG is not free--don't I wish it were! That is, so far as
I know it is not free. I use version 9.something and love it.

I prefer it to Norton as you do, but you have to give Norton credit; they've helped a lot of people. And the program does take up a lot
of computer space. You can set your time for it to scan, however, I think, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Yep.

I update my AVG program each morning first thing,too. Then I delete the firewall history, log history, and scanner history. Somehow doing
that makes the whole computer system faster. The firewall log builds up rapidly over a 24-hour period. If you know how to set that to
do it automatically when I open the computer that would be wonderful
if you would share that info.  I would imagine that the newest  AVG program does that for you automatically.

You have to set yours to check the google urls you use?  My version

checks every program the computer pulls up when you ask for something and then checks the programs that are known to be safe (with a big green checkmark).  It never occurred to me that verifying the accuracy of a url before opening it was something that you had to check into before you opened it.  I'm not bragging; I could have been in real trouble if I had purchased a program that required you to verify the urls before opening them!

It's such a shame that this happened to you Jamiee, sure
hope you get everything up and running soon...computer virusus can
be hard to deal with...

After you open the program, Wallaby, there is a title page that lists
the the various components under the heading History (and others).
You open it and see Firewall at the bottom of the list; above it is
log, and scanner at the top. You just click the one you want and
open it and delete the data accumulated in that module.
