Hi, I usually post on the chronic pain board, but my pain management Dr put me on Nortriptyline for my depression that I am going through due to my non-stop pain.

Does anyone take Nortriptyline and if so what has your experience been with it? I have only been on it for 8 days. My Dr. also said that it can help with my sleeping (lack of it) and my pain.

I have taken amitriptyline, but not the other. I don't know if they are similar. Is it a tricyclic antidepressant? If so it is older. Generally these are good meds. And do help with pain some. But they tend to make you sleepy at first. I hope that you can find what is right for you. I am on pristiq, abilify and xanax. They work good for me, though this weather has me aching. I also take pain meds too.

I sure do hope that you feel better soon. I will look this med up and see what I can come up with. Probably no more than you already know. Take care,

My Dr did tell me that it is an older drug and has long been used for treating depression. As of last night I am up to the max dose of 80mg and seem to be tolerating it just fine. Not sure what would have happened otherwise. I think I am losing my mind because either he told me and I just forgot, or I didn't even ask what could happen if I didn't "like" it.


I would welcome the sleepy part, as I don't sleep very well, and I have noticed that I am sleeping better since I started it. But Dr also increased my Oxy so could it have been that?? just don't know for sure.


I have done a ton of google searches and I just wanted to hear first hand from someone the good or bad ya know.. Oh well, I have rambled enough, thanks for your thoughts.

What mg of oxy do you take? Is it oxycontin? That is a wonderful medication for pain. I take the norco. Six a day. I would like to move up to something stronger, but I don't think my doctor is in a hurry to do that. And the norco seem to keep my pain at bay, though I take two at a time, three times a day instead of one every four hours. I know once I get into the stronger narcotics, I will be building up a tolerance, but I took a five mg percocet once and it really helped.

It sounds like the noratiptaline (sp) is working well for you and that is good. I am happy for you. It sounds like you have a lot of neck and back issues. I do too, but not as bad as yours. Do you take a muscle relaxer by any chance. I use to take soma, but my new doctor discontinued it. I was bummed. But stockpiled a bunch so I do have one when I need it. He put me on flexeril, but i don't like it. It gives me a hangover, no matter when I take it.

Hi Karen,

Yes it's Oxycontin 10mg. I just started taking 10mg during the day and I take 20mg at night. I also take the norco or percocet for breakthrough pain as needed. I tried the Soma's before but I didn't like them. You know its one thing to be in pain but then to get and be depressed on top of it, well it just makes things 100 times worse. I have days where I promise you I don't know my head from a hole in the ground :)

Just make sure when you feel you need something stronger that you ask for it. None of us need to be in pain if we don't have to.

You have a good week too. I have a prettty high pain tolerance, so I can handle a 4or5 on a pain scale of 1 to 10. And that generally lasts all day. But I think I am getting costoshrondritis. (sp). It is where the muscles in the chest area hurt. That is beginning to bother me. It makes it hard to lift my arms. But I see the doc next week so, that should help. I am still getting to know this doctor. I only see him once every three months. Which is fine for me. I don't like going.
