The Difference Between Freedom and Independence

 Several of us have been posting on the last few days about the need

to have independence in one's life before we can really be of help to others.  I have the feeling that maybe some folks might think of freedom as independence.  I see a couple of differences.  Please permit me to speak a moment about those differences:

1.  Freedom can mean having no control; that can be dangerous because it leads to chaos and that leads to tyranny--the worst form of government for oneself or for the state.

2.  Independence, however, means free from outside control.  One stands alone, yes, but not without internal controls that guide and help.  The voice of reason is the controller in a state of independence.  One has the assurance of spiritual guide--(the voice of reason) that leads, and it always leads with gentleness and strength.  (It requires great strength to be gentle.)

I agree with this. I prefer some structure in my life rather than total freedom - but I also prefer to be as independent as I am able. I think younger kids/teens dream of freedom, while young adults/older adults desire independence. Sometimes we feel the need for a little of both.

A very astute observation, Alaskah; that's probably why the United States Constitution prevents anyone younger than 35 from running for president of the United States. (I think it's probably considered the youngest age at which real maturity occurs.)

When you on depending on anybody you are INDEPENDENT.
When nop one is depencing on you you are FREE,

When you are depending on somebody, you are not independent, you are dependent.

Interesting point of view.

However, I see it as this:

Freedom= having the ability to choose things in live. We have control. Everyone is reality is responsible for their actions good or bad, regardless of diagnosis when of aware of illness. As adults we know right from wrong.

Independence = again have the ability to choose, perhaps within perimeters set by countrys limitations. Person is their conscious. No one else is considered in decisions most of the time. You can be in a relationship and still be independent.


Either way, the voice of reason, is up to the individual. There is good and bad in everything.
Balance, compassion and empathy are key to peaceful outcomes.
