i keep seeing posts where people won't take their meds

   or are afraid to because of the side effects, but what i don't understand is why they don't just listen to their doctors and do what they say for them to do side effects or not. what is worse, being sad all the time and having anxiety or a few headaches that go away after a week or 2? I had questions, but i asked my doctor everything i could think of and he answered them to the best of his knowledge. i just don't think it is wise to do things on your own, like lower your dosage or not take it or to take to much. i have a co worker who just deals with her depression and anxiety on her own by saying " life is a bi&ch and then you die" and it really irritates me because that is not how life is suppose to be. life is suppose to be fun, and sometimes i just want to shake her and talk some sense into her and tell her that anti depressants will help you if you stick to them. i just think some people are so pig headed that they would rather be misrable then listen to someone else who might know better.

I am on effexor for over 3 years, last 5 months i took zeldox-efexor. last month i stoped zeldox because it makes me panic at night and i can't relax. i told this to my doctor he never listens though. now i noticed that since i stoped zeldox i can sleep eazier, but can't wake up . so i don't know maybe it was wrong to stop it on my own. I haven't seen my doctor for a while.. i should go see him and find out what to do ..

You are right Sober . . . Doctor should always be involved in the med process.

Akram, if your doctor doesn't listen to you or explain his motives with the meds and you have had other issues with him/her, then it might be time to switch docs. You really need a doc you can talk to and who listens to you. I wouldn't switch docs for one bad appointment, but if you are having a bad experience every visit, then it might be time to make a switch.

Sober, are things starting to get better for you?

I understand exactly what you are saying, however, a lot of us have medical issues to contend with in addition to depression. Personally, I get sick and tired of sitting on the bed every Sunday night putting my little pills into each slot. All 14 of them. Some of the pills I take do not mix good with others. If someone doesn't want to take anti-depressants, there is nothing you can do but be supportive. If that person gets on your nerves so much that they are effecting your recovery, bid them a fond "farewell" Hang in there!

first off it's not that we're pig headed or stubborn. I am one that after a short while of taking med's will feel that I don't need them and I stop taking them for a while, and I quickly learn why i'm taking them. It's almost like a denial stage we go through. It's like we can't accept the fact we have to take some kind of drug to feel normal. How normal is that, taking a drug. I don't like taking medicines and I have to stay on myself to take my synthroid every day its the same thing. I just don't like the fact I have to take them to be "normal" makes me feel a little abnormal if you ask me. I'm not stubborn its a personal issue. My husband is on me all the time did you take your med's today and I roll my eyes and say yes. sometimes i did take them and sometimes i didn't. which reminds me I have to take my synthroid when I get home this evening. It's like great one more thing I have to keep up with and try and not mess up.

As for myself, depression is a new thing to me, and yes, my doctor, who is my new doctor cause i just relocated to another state perscribed the medicine for me. He said there weren't many side effects to the medicine. So i did my research on the pill, and I took a half of it one night, and i felt HORRIBLE, so i haven't taken another one since. This was all before i started seeing a therapist. The first time i went to my therapist, i told her what was going on, and told her that i had been perscribed lexapro, but i didn't want to take it because i was afraid of how I was feeling physically. Also, I had epilepsy as a child, and i've read that some anti depressants arent good for those with that condition. Anyway, after my first visit to my therapist, I felt a whole lot better, I'm not 100% yet, but i'm definatley not feeling as bad as I was a month ago. So, with that said. I don't think it's always necessary to to take meds. For some it is, and for some it isn't. A physical doctor can only tell you what to do about your symptoms, but can't necessary get to the core of what causes the depression and take it away. But somtimes a good therapist can. So i'm not being pigheaded or stubborn, I'm doing what's been good for me.

    I understand what you are saying yet not all doctors are the same. If a doc prescribes me a new drug, I would think that he wouldn't hand me the script and say "C-ya". If he did, I would hope the patient would say, "What the heck is this for"? Like I said in my first post, some of us have illnesses and take a lot of medication. Believe me that the meds have letterally burned a hole in my pipes and stomach. The one thing is not to stop and start. That's when you really get messed up. Anti-depressants as you prob know, take about 3-4 weeks to regulate your mental status. Once you do, you get better and can see results. If you don't, you got the wrong med. The thing that gets me ticked is that we get one and it don't work and then have to get another and it gets expensive after a while even with good insurance. 3 of my meds cost $50 ea. a month and that's my co-pay. Imitrex is $5 a pill, pk of 9=$45. It's redeculous. The labs are making $$ hand over fist because we are all depressed. They keep hicking up the cost. Shiesters! Anyway, what the heck was I saying before I got on a rant??? OH, meds. I guess people are going to do whatever they want to and suffer the consequences. That's all I can say so I see it as a loose/loose situation.
