AngMichelle,
Welcome to the forum. A very good question. You have a very good therapist!
I have used both therapies and they are both very good. This is the difference I have found.
DBT is more in the moment, life saving;self-harm stopping! It will change the way you view your trauma and memories in the long run and they will not control you in the long run. The secret with DBT I learned the hard way, is that the skills must become part of your daily life. They have to be practiced on your good days; so when bad times come you have the skills soundly in tact and they work. This takes practice and time, dedication to the therapy.
I used the following workbook with my therapist and a group, the cover is green. "The Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Workbook"
CBT is thought process and not being a victim any longer among other things. Turning your thoughts to a more positive line of thinking. This can be interweaved into DBT with some of the skills.
I wish you strength and strong will, be honest with your therapist and
try hard with DBT it will help you in the end.
Peace
Trina
