I am currently on fluoxetine 20mg for SAD, 6 weeks in to treatment. I have previously taken this medication at 40mg after experiencing a breakdown. I took it for around a year and gained around 28lbs in this time. I had however lost around 32lbs in the few months prior due to my stress levels so put this down to my appetite returning to normal. However, this time round I am experiencing uncontrollable and insatiable sugar cravings and have put on around 10lbs in the 6 weeks. I'm a bit confused, I know this is known to be a side effect with SSRI's but as fluoxetine is used to treat binge eating I wonder if it could possibly be the drug causing it. I've added a poll to my post, please let me know if you've experienced this and if you can spare the time tell me more!
Thanks

I gained weight just looking at food on that. Prozac...
Welcome to the forum Gemgem. I think it will level off, if it doesn't, talk to the doctor and see about getting on something else. I am sorry it is causing you such sugar cravings.

Thanks Karen, I feel 100 times better taking it, all symptoms of SAD completely gone but I'm starting to get stressed out by the constant eating!

Try eating fruit and vegies. Especially the vegies. Try to stop the sugar if you can. Eventually the fruits will be sweet enough. But don't starve yourself completely or you will binge. Allow a small amount once in a while.
Good luck. I hope you can do this so you can continue to take a medication that helps you. I just had one of mine bumped up due to the long winter. I got cabin fever, but can't get myself to go out.
Take care, keep posting...

I had a hard time with this at first also. As Karen said, try fruits and veggies. I did this to ease the sweet tooth. I found carrots worked well for veggies, they are kind of sweet. I was an apple fiend this pat summer. It worked though and I was lucky to have a neighbor with 2 apple trees.
Take care,
Bill

I just started on effexor...and now vegetables make me nauseous...always ate a ton of vegetables before. Now all I crave are carbs. interesting how these meds affect this.
