I have a chronic mood disorder (Dysthymic) and I see a psychiatrist. This has been the best decision i've made in my life.
It was very daunting to start talking to someone you don't know about your problem. Taking the first step to see a health professional is a big one. The next big step is to admit to that person that you need help.
I was one of the stubborn ones. I first went to see my shrink, I just told him what I wanted him to hear and get out of there as soon as I can because I wasn't ready for help at that time. I had to finished 3 compulsory session with him for some requirement that I can't remember for now, but all I did then was just say everything is ok, I'm dealing with it, blah blah blah... But I got sicker and sicker because I did not face the problem nor try to address it as I should.
It took me 2 more months before I was ready to open up and speak up, I can remember the relief after that, I am no longer carrying this heavy baggage with me by myself anymore. There's now someone who (yes I pay) to help me go through my problems with me. It take courage and determination to want to be better again, for me it was the point when I felt I've hit rock bottom and I need help to get back up or something bad will happen to me.
Over time you'll develop a rapport with this health professional. They will be able to help you device solutions and come up with steps to deal with your issues. What I'm trying to say is the first encounter is always the hardest. And also if you don't feel comfortable with this person, please remember, you should have the right to find someone who's more suitable to deal with your situation. For me, I felt comfortable talking to my psychiatrist, but I felt that I've been constantly judged when I talked to my psychologist, so I stopped seeing my psychologist and just focus seeing my psychiatrist, this also helps me not having to repeat the same problem twice.
Also, remember, whatever you tell that person will always be confidential, it will not leave that room. So it's a place for you to express your problems and share it with this person so they can help you cope better with life in general.
