Stopping drinking and antidepressants

My husband has taken Effexor for a number of years and has been a long term regular heavy drinker. He has now stopped drinking completely for 3 weeks and after an initially positive start mentally is now in week 3 experiencing symptoms of physical depression similar to those he experienced a few years ago when his previous meds stopped working.

Would the sudden stopping of alcohol have affected the way Effexor is working for him??

Any info much appreciated!

And welcome to the depression forum. I am glad that you joined us but sorry for the reason.

I think your question would be best asked to his doctor. He might need a bump on the Effexor. If he drank heavily for a long time, going off alcohol will be hard for him. There are many withdrawal symptoms that he could have. Depression being one of them. Though alcohol does make you depressed, he will be better off in the long run. It will take time though.

I hope he feels better soon. Maybe the two of you could do somethings together, such as long walks, watching a movie. He will need to keep his mind busy.

Thanks for the quick reply! He will be visiting his doctor in a couple of weeks but we were just interested to know if anyone else had had similar experiences and how they approached them.
