When the generic version of Cymbalta hit the market, I took it and within a week was begging to be put back on the brand name product. I became very weak, depressed, sick to my stomach, pains coming and going throughout my body. Felt as if the force of gravity had grown stronger--at times it was an effort to hold my head up. The doctor gave me a prescription which the pharmacy wouldn't fill since my insurance would not pay for a "refill" for another three weeks. I had some samples and "leftovers" on hand and those got me through the month. Within a day or two of starting the brand name stuff again I felt better, though not as good as I had before trying the generic.
I refilled my prescriptions five days ago. Two days ago, I began feeling almost completely shut down again. Although my doc has been writing "dispense as written" on my Cymbalta prescriptions, I discovered I had been given the generic version again. So, I guess it will be back to the doctor again as soon as possible. But if I can't get a refill, I may have to wait another three weeks to get back on the brand name drug. For the moment, not functioning well at all and that does not seem a pleasant prospect.
Have to say I have had a very mixed experience with Cymbalta. A decrease in dosage just over a year ago led to what I can only describe as a psychotic break, complete with hallucinations, weird ideas, blackouts, and who knows what else. While it worked, it worked. I do not think it works much any more but I am terrified to reduce the dose again or even attempt to stop taking it.
