Hey Buddahhead,
Welcome to this tiny place, and you're in the right place alright!
Anyways back to the main point...
Because getting high simply erases the depression you're suffering for a short period that slowly becomes a habit for depressed people to turn to drugs, I have a step by step advice for you on how to erase that habit. (:
1) Don't hang out with your friends who smoke/do drugs anymore unless they're sincerely nice, kind, lends a helping hand whenever you need them then that's okay I guess but if it's in that case, then you would have to tell your friends to stop doing drugs too. Drugs makes your dopamine level rise to a high peak which erases the depressed feeling in you but only for a temporary time. After the drug wears off, it's very hard for your dopamine level to rise that high again which would leave you in a very depressed state.
2) Start with small steps first like decrease the normal usage of drugs you usually use in a week and slowly decrease from a couple of times to one time and from once a week to none at all. It's not easy for somebody who's already used to doing drugs to completely stop abruptly so take baby steps first. Fight the urge every time you feel like doing drugs cause lemme tell you that it's all gonna be worth it in the end buddy.
3) You mentioned that you've had tons of stress recently so instead of turning to drugs, turn to a piece of paper and pen and write all your stress down. Write down all the things you want to yell in the beach when nobody's around. Write it all down and I guarantee that it'd make you feel better. If not then try doing the things that you like to do to make you in a peaceful state (not drugs) like: singing, writing poetries, read books or meditating. To me, it's not distracting my problems to something else... since I love singing and I find that whenever I sing, I'm calm and erases my anxieties. Find that thing that makes you feel safe and calm.
4) NEVER and I mean EVER give up. These methods that I gave you may not work for the first several times but remember, if you really want to change and erase this habit then believe in yourself that you can do it. I know that you could do it because seeking for advice is already a GREAT first step so you're already making progress (:
I truly believe that you can do it. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF AND NEVER GIVE UP.
Good luck bud, I know you can do it.
