Thinking about asking my GP if I can be admitted into a psychiatric hospital...

... Literally at the end of my rope.

Anyone here from the UK who has stayed in one? Did it help? I'm consumed by emotions I can't control any more. My parents keep on and on and on and on and on turning a blind eye: I've told my mum a million times I need to get away from my dad, but in some ways she's almost as bad as my dad.

hey you can front up to emergency and see some-one from the psych team. well i'm in australia but i am sure you can also. i have had 28 admissions. all needed. if you refuse meds, well here anyway they can make you an involuntary patient, i'd rather you not go through that. call your clinic, even talk verbally to your doctor and advise him, thus yu can go to the hospital and or your community mental health team and they can asses you, talk to your doc and sort out the best treatment options for you. even call them and they can come to you. we have, in a lot of areas what they call catt. crisis assesment treatment teams. maybe you have something similar. if you at any stage feel at risk then call an ambulance. take care.

I'm too sleep deprived to make any decisions more serious than deciding what to have for dinner, so, as wretched as I feel, I'll just have to ride it out for today at least. I think I have calmed down enough to be able to do that, but beforehand I almost nearly did phone my GP's surgery - and as somebody who has a phobia of talking on the phone, you know I'm in a desperate state if I'm prepared to call for help.

@Jamie - This is a bit of a personal question I suppose, but at what point did you realise you needed to be admitted? Is there any other criteria for being admitted apart from being a risk to yourself or other people? Yesterday I had not one, but two, meltdowns, which involved much throwing of things and crying; the second meltdown left me physically ill. I got over it after taking some alka seltzer and codeine, but it frightened me slightly: never reacted that physically before. Today so far I've had one mini-meltdown: the tomatoes in the bowl were toast... ¬_¬

@Carl - When you say the control won't last as long as I need it to, do you mean by that I'm liable to be booted out after a week? If so, given the NHS you'd be quite right. In fact, I'm not even sure I could get admitted even if I tried to.

so angle1 509, when people need psychiatric care people go into a psychiatric hospital. can we move away from the labeling and stigma please. re: mental hopital. please know that the needs each person is different; moreover one person's experience does not mean it will be the same for all. and people go into hospital for various reasons. we are all human beings. people with a mental illness should not be labled strange. we need support and understanding.

I haven't stayed in a hospital in the UK for people with mental health problems/concerns, but I have
been to visit my mum in a hospital in the UK, several times in the past.

I would assume that they vary slightly, and I guess also it would also depend on the ward structure.

I don't want to say too much about it, and sway your opinion either way.

I hope that you are able to bring the doctors or health care providers appointment forward.

Are you allocated a psychiatrist, also, do you know that there are CPN's, community psychiatric nurses. There may be some outpatient programmes and there are, at least in my city, though I'm not sure how many are still running, but other teams which work with people with mental health problems/illness.

There were some creative classes running free in my city. I know about all of this because of my mum, but it may vary from city to city.

I'm feeling worn out but have calmed down a lot. For now... :-/

I hear quite conflicting views about psych wards: some people seem to think they're hell on earth while others have generally had a really good experience. Either way I'm a bit scared of what will happen. I obviously don't want to have a hellish stay, but even if I had a really good one, I've still got to come back to the same environment which triggered my breakdown in the first place...

@KMF - Love the motto >_>. It's so true as well; I got the boot from a mental health service a few months ago because I had the temerity to say I was feeling a bit better. I did add that I didn't think it would last and I was scared of relapsing back into depression like I always had done up until now, but the damage had already been done. I'd only seen the guy twice, so it wasn't exactly like this came after months and months of counselling.

@Happy Bean - No, not as such. I have seen a woman who is working underneath a psychiatrist (that sounds a bit wrong when I put it like that... oh well, not rewording it now) a couple of times, but I don't think anything is going to come from it. I find it hard to speak and probably sound a bit robotic. I'm so bad at communication; inwardly I feel like I'm falling apart and outwardly I probably appear as someone who's sulky or whatever.

I rarely take drastic measures. I did once about 5 years ago, but to even talk about it would be to breach the rules of this forum. Anyway, I'm still alive to not tell the tale, I guess. Even that didn't result in anything apart from a one-off visit by a CPN while I was still in hospital.

@Thundercloud - This sentence - Thing is if you do go your life will be waiting once you return home, that's the reality so you have to be very careful - was what somebody else told me too. That's so true, and I think is what really screwed up my recovery from surgery. Once the fevers and pain were gone and I had detoxed from various horrible meds, it was like I was face-to-face with reality for the first time in years. It was horrible. It was as though literally every single bad memory, thought, feeling, emotion, etc. rose from its grave to come and haunt me: traumatised is the only word I can think of to describe it. I am traumatised - my parents would scoff at the notion - but what else explains these re-occurring flashbacks, inability to get my dad out of my brain, etc.? So many bad memories and no good ones: yeah, I'm traumatised.

Er, sorry, I went off on a bit of a tangent :-/

Thanks a lot to everyone who replied: it honestly helped. Maybe tomorrow I'll feel like I'm going out of my mind again, but at least for today I feel better.

Maybe the doctor could put you in touch with some support organisations, or suggest avenues to help.

Last time I went to the doctors, I wrote a short list of things I wanted to ask or discuss.
