I get these brain and body zaps too. Normally they are triggered by loud noises, when I'm falling asleep or when I get worked up with my anxiety. My doctor put me on Neurontin. It works to keep them at bay but I have to take it three times a day and usually forget my middle dose. I also am on Prozac for my anxiety and depression. When I do get these "zaps" it is somewhat painful and literally feels like A mild to moderate electric shock. Always in my head, lips, arms, chest and sometimes I can feel it even in my feet, like it travels down my body! It friggen SUCKS!!! Then it makes me irritable too bc it always scares me it "shocks" me in more ways than one. I wish they would all together just stop but it does make me feel better that there are other ppl out suffering in the same way. Misery loves company!

Try to remember that second pill that you are missing. I use to get them when I was taking Effexor. It was mostly in my head. I could actually sometimes hear my eyes move. Strange.
I hope that they go away.

Yeah, I get them too, although not too often now. They are terrible, though, whenever I have titrated down a medicine before starting another. I especially notice them when I turn my head.
I also take Neurontin and have a difficult time getting the midday dose in. My Neuro said I could take it with dinner, and then again at bedtime. Maybe you can see if you dr. Ok's it that way.
Good luck!

Thanks for sharing hope4. I don't get them a whole bunch but I do notice they come more when I'm stressed.

Hi,
I used to get the brain zaps but not anymore unless I'm severely depressed.
When I turned 50 (I'm now 53 years young) I would get zaps and electricity in my head and shooting down my legs, heard many woman around that age get them then they stopped :)

That was about
the age I was getting them, but I thought maybe the med change made them stop. Hard to say now...
Oh well... At least I don't have them anymore.

I have now been off the Effexor XR and Seroquel for exactly 1 month. I have never had anything that approaches the way you guys describe your "brain zaps" either while I was on the medications or since I have discontinued them. The only thing that comes close to this kind of thing for me started after my discontinuance. They are not painful sensations, per se, nor do they run the length of my body or create a feeling of dread in their recurrence. When I first wake up, enter changing light conditions from one area to another, or make quick turns of my head.....I experience an audible,(though only to me, I'm sure) brief "clack-clack" phantom sound that only lasts for a few microseconds, and then they are gone. No pain, no light flashes, no feeling of an electrical "zap". Nevertheless, it is still a bit aggravating, and I hope they begin to go away soon. One thing is, I have not been sleeping for enough hours recently, since I came off the meds. I go to bed late, (it is 2:00 a.m, as I write this entry), and I get up at the first sign of daylight. I sleep very soundly in the interim, though, getting a full 5 hrs. of apparently dreamless sleep. I think this sleep deprivation is causing some dormant exhaustion-related sequelae.

Welcome to the forum! I was getting them when I first was diagnosis with major depressive disorder and PTSD. Yes, they are painful at times and annoying.
I have found that relaxation tech. and mindfulness tech help tremendously. Knowing when you are beginning to get upset or anxious and using your coping skills to calm down does a lot to stop the zaps from happening at all.
this does take practice and some time, however, well worth the effort.
Peace and comfort

Yes, hopefully not!
Mindfulness really helps, hope the zaps stop soon.

Thank you! How did you learn about
breathing skills, coping skills? Do you go to therapy? I have been a couple times before but not in a year or so.

Twilk,
In our resource thread (the very first one) there is a site on mindfulness and other things. I think it is mindful.org.
You can get books on it too. But I highly recommend therapy, it really helps keep us together.
I wish you well.
Hugs, Karen...
