   This is inspired by the annual NY hot dog eating contest - even though I've never been to one of them.

   It's about casual food on a day that's so often filled with casual foods!

   There is a local food place that has grown from a little road-side trailer in the 70's to at least 10 to 12 sit-down restaurants - probably more - and each has a capacity of 200 or more.

   The name is "Portillos".

   It is usually thought of as a hot dog place, but their Chicago-style Italian beefs are among the best in town. Their chicken sandwiches are great - so are their salads I'm told.

   But the most unexpected food item of exceptional quality is .... their homemade chocolate fudge cake. It is so good, I once bought one for a granddaughters birthday and once for a graduation. It simply melts in your mouth!

I had a doc appointment in a near by (well, 50 miles actually) city and stopped at a fish place called Skalleywags. I got perch and walleye to go with coleslaw, French fries, apple sauce and some macaroni and cheese. I had to drive all that way smelling it and I was hungry. It was very good to say the least... Loved the fresh fish.

The city is on the bay of Lake Michigan... So the fish comes in fresh daily. Yay!!! I will go there again...

I love to talk about food. Though I don't make awesome stuff like Myself. I just cook regular stuff.

Ummmmmm, let me think.....help me Rob. What do I like?

Oh yeah I remember! Mexican food!!!

It's not a mom and pop place but a chain- pappasitos. They serve there red sauce warm. For your fajitas, they give you a side of garlic butter which is to die for. Their table side fresh guacomole is incredible. And omg, there tres leches served with chunks of white chocolate...oh my!!

Now I see a visit there in my near future!! Lol!

Viet Gourmet. A former 7-11, transformed into a more upscale eatery. Vietnamese food, obviously, and with a very refined balance of flavors.

   Karen ...... I'm embarassed to say I've never had Walleyed Pike before - and I've heard it's so good .... and I'm a Great Lakes resident. What a sheltered life i live at times!

   Michele ....... "tres leches"? Why does this sound French in a Mexican Restaurant? Or is it a French/Mexican Restaurant? Wasn't there a French/Mexican war? Pass me another pina colada!

   JB1 ........ is that annual hot dog eating contest anywhere near you? I saw it once a few years ago on ESPN2. This morning, they said the new strategy is to dip the hot dog into kool-aid so that the bun softens and is easier to swallow. Ugh!!!!!!

   Myself ....... I figured you would have some creative eating place. This has nothing to do with SE Asia - but, a long time ago, i was taken to a Palestinian restaurant (formerly something like a 7/11) by a date who was from Israel. The food was unexpectedly good - wish i could find that place again.

When not considering costs, there is a local favorite:

It's a Spanish Tappas - by the name of "La Tasca"

It was where I first had mussels - and they're magnificent there!

It is a place where Sangria is made in their basement - the fruit is great!

And, to me - it's a perfect dining experience for anywhere from 2 to 4!

It is where a 2-1/2 hour dinner is normal!

Scallops, sausages and cheeses .... oh my!
