Zoloft muscle twitching ? Anyone else ?

My doctor switched me from Celexa to Zoloft 3 weeks ago since the Celexa was giving me headaches. I didn't know that was the cause of the headaches until I did some research. I suffered with them for 6 months just thinking they were stress related.

First week I was on Zoloft I had no issues. Second week after I hit 100 mg I began to have strange muscle twitches in my right thigh. I looked up the symptom on Google and thought I had a serious disease. I had the worst anxiety I have ever had in my life.

I was so anxious I made an appointment with a neuro doctor and saw him yesterday. He thought they were benign but wasn't sure so he ordered blood work and an EMG which I haven't had yet since it has to be approved by insurance.

I came home yesterday and did some research on Zoloft. I had no idea it could cause muscle twitching. It could be a coincidence, but they started right after I got to 100 mg. I haven't taken Zoloft since yesterday morning and it seems like the twitches have slowed significantly. Anyone else have a similar experience ?

I haven't had your experience, but I hope it goes away. Usually the side effect do go away in a couple of weeks, but if it continues to be bothersome after that, I would mention it to the doc.

Welcome to the forum. You will get answers from other members, though the weekends are kind of slow.

Don't stop your medication without consulting your doctor. A lot of these medications need to be tapered. You may have a bad reaction. SSRI's can be tricky. IF you had Celexa in your system for a long time, then the Zoloft, it might be hard if you don't taper down with a doctor's help. I don't want to see you sick.

Take care and do keep posting. Be careful with Dr. Google, it can cause a lot of anxiety.

I agree with Karen about not stopping your medicine with out consulting your doctor.

I also had weird side effects after being upped past 100mg's of Zoloft, but I was real shaky to the point I had to be taken off of it and put on something else, I did not have muscle twitching however, just very very shaky and I called my doctor right away and he didn't even wean me off of it, he put me on something else.

My experience with Zoloft was very good till I hit the 100mg mark and then I started having issues, I know we all are different and react differently, but I would give your doctor a call for sure, he should know if it is anything to worry about being you apparently have been on it without an issue till now.

Thanks for your responses. I did stop the zoloft completely over the weekend and the twitches have pretty much stopped except for one every once in a while. Could just be cramping since the one way I could stop the twitches before I stopped the zoloft was to leave my leg muscle flexed on purpose. The twitches only happened when they were at rest. My doc had put me on zoloft primarily for anxiety. It is so ironic that a medicine for anxiety caused the worst anxiety I have ever had. I do have a tendency to always think in worst case scenarios though and am addicted to my phone and internet. Not a good combination.


I faxed my doctor over the weekend and she left a voicemail for me this morning saying it would be up to me if I want to continue it or not. I have a follow-up appointment with her next Monday anyways. If my anxiety increases then I will start again.

I think I am just sensitive to SSRIs. I could not take Pristiq or Effexor due to extreme nausea/stomach issues that wouldn't go away. I had headaches that were a result of Celexa. Had those for 6 months before finding out the celexa was the cause. Then the zoloft caused this twitching. I may just have to stick with things like adderall and wellbutrin. Really crazy that I can tolerate an amphetamine without side effects, but can't seem to handle an SSRI.

Hey Pittguy-

Just have to chime in to what the others said- don't stop the Zoloft cold turkey. There is something called discontinuation syndrome caused by stopping your medication cold turkey. It ain't pretty but can be prevented or effects lessened, if you wean off of the medication per the doctors orders.

try cutting bck to 50mg a day . it worked well for me for 6 years with little side effects. when its time to quit -just switch to prozac and the withdrawl will be easy. 50 mg was fine for me and 100 was too strong.
