Like everyone else has said, alcohol is a depressant and doesn't help! My box says avoid alcohol. Being the person I am, I like to go out and have fun. When I first started taking lexapro it was the only medication I was on, I was able to drink normally as I had always done, the only time I would get drunk or blackout drunk was when I drank too much and I was aware it was my own fault.
However, being really drunk would only happen after a lot of drinks, and I mean a lot!
So I would advise your boyfriend to stop drinking for a while and when his mental health gets better he will feel better in general. The only way he will be able to function on lexapro and have a few drinks is if he is in the right mind state, if you're depressed and you drink you're going to get more depressed, simple as that! So I say stop drinking for a while, people may ask questions and wonder why he isn't drinking (happened to me living in Ireland! Ha!) but they'll get over it and he can definitely still have fun without alcohol!
Hope this has helped a bit but as others have also said, it's up to himself to really make it work :)
