My daughter is struggling with deep depression

I feel so helpless. I love her so much and it kills me to see her going through this. She is getting treatment but in the meantime, to watch her cry and struggle with dark thoughts. This is by far the hardest thing I have ever been through. I have struggled for years with bi-polar depression but I am currently doing well.


Please, I know none of you know her but just keep her in your thoughts, send positive thoughts to this thread. I know it sounds silly.....

It is so difficult watching somebody that we love struggle with depression. Really about all you can do is be there and keep things positive and light. I will keep her in my prayers.

You can only be there for her.

Help her learn coping skills that you have used. Research and learn new ones such as mindfulness if you don't already use it.

Teach her to use art and journaling as an emotional outlet.

Exercise with her, if only for a daily walk around the block, helps you both.

Thank you both so much for your responses.

We talk...a lot. She tells me how she is feeling, and the tears flow. She cries all the time. She's not eating much so I went and bought her Ensure to drink. I am trying to keep her strength up. We talked of coping skills this morning, deep breathing exercises and visualizations. I like the idea of art as an emotional outlet. Mindfulness saves me every day.


Her new med hasn't really kicked in yet, we are waiting and hoping.

I'm glad to hear the two of you talk about it. My daughter and I so the same. Being open and honest about where we are at on any given day helps so much. This way, we know sharp comments aren't 'true' and helps to keep either of us from getting a resentment. Crying releases anti stress enzymes, so it's not such a bad thing when you think about it. It's her body trying to rebalance itself.

Moms all miss the days when we could "kiss it and make it better". She is getting help and that is the best thing for her. She's got a great mom!

Just something I learned from my Dr, meds that work for you have a better chance of working for her. There's a generic link to our brain chemistry.

I'm so glad you are there for her even if its hard. You're doing what you can. I'm sorry the both of you are going through this and I will certainly keep you in my thoughts.

Thank you all so much for responding. Today she said she thinks she is starting to even out. She feels a tiny bit better. :)

She is taking a small medical leave, hopefully, this will give her the time for her med to help and give her a much needed break.

What a wonderful mother you are!

Some of us were not so lucky, I have goosebumps writing this. I can not express the feeling I have. You are doing a wonderful job.

If I were you daughter, and looking back over what I have been through, I think, painting TOGETHER would the thing I would want most, might not know it at the time.

For instance, choose an emotion, such as ANGER, NUMBNESS, CALM, SAD AND each paint how that looks to you.

What a wonderful way to see another side of your daughter and mother.
