Easy does it. Feeling 'depressed' and being diagnosed with depression are two different things. I've discovered that if "I" say something to my children, make suggestions, etc. they tend to reject it. If someone else says something, makes suggestions, they tend to accept it. I hear this 'complaint' from many other moms as well.
It is good that he is seeking professional help. Just listening is one of the best things we can do. Of course, we are more sympathetic to our child's side of the 'story'. I tell my children, "I'm sorry you are hurting. Let me know if there is anything I can do." and leave it at that. Send him a card. That way, he can have your reassuring words whenever he needs them, even if you two can't connect at the moment.
