I have UC, so I do understand about the irregularity.
TMI alert
I run towards constipation, despite a primarily-veggie diet and water. I work, and my system has 'learned' to shut down, and now that is all it does.
Grrr.
I take stool softeners--and I use suppositories that have a lubricant for hemorrhoids. Even this only works sometimes. I have a couple of different medications that have a drying effect.
My philosophy is--side effects happen. What matters to me is the efficacy of the medication for the condition being treated. If the side effects are worse than the effect on the condition, I talk to my doctor about changing. If the effect is greater than the bother of the side effects, it's a done deal. A basic cost-deficit analysis.
Bear in mind that a realistic 'try' of a new med is two months--it can take that long for soe side efects to subside.
