question about St. John's Wort and Lexapro

Yesterday I was undecided about going to the dr about my depression.  So I read up on St. John's Wort and thought it might help.  I took 300 mg yesterday and 300 mg this morning.  Well I decided to go to the doctor and she prescribed me 10 mg of Lexapro. 

Since I haven't been taking the SJW long, how long do I have to wait to take the Lexapro?  I'd really like to start as soon as I can because I want to feel better.

HI Nikki078, Have you started on you Lexapro yet?  As I am sure that you did your research before you started taking St. John's Wart it is an herb that is believed to help with depression.  I have also tried it in between antidepressants and while taking antidepressants and myself didn't get much benefit from it.  I was wondering if you told you doctor if you were taking it?  It is important to let them know everything you are taking even if it is over the counter herb for a possible reaction.  Good luck with your Lexapro! ~elisha

That does sound like something you should ask your doctor. And make sure you know what not to take while you take Lexapro such as tyenol...you might get some bad reactions. It took me a couple of weeks for the Lex to really start working.

Hi Boolah, welcome to Healing Well forum!  I just wanted to say that it would take a couple of weeks for the Lexapro to start working or any antidepressant for that matter as they have to work up to what is called a theraputic level in the body.  They dont just start to work at full level the first day or two that you take them. 

Nikki - Boolah makes a good point with the Tylenol also, I couldnt find any drug contradications regarding this but it is possiable.  Your pharamist is always a good place to start if you have any questions regarding your medications.  They can pull up what you take and you can tell them of any OTC's that you may have questions about. ~elisha
