Back in 2000, I finally decided to get help for my issues with depression and anger.
Just before going into therapy, I wondered what any counselor was going to be able to say to me that would make me start feeling happier and less angry. The reason was because I didn't think I had any irrational beliefs.
But man was I wrong! As soon as I started seeing a shrink, I quickly found out that I had a lot of irrational beliefs.
When I went into therapy, I learned that I couldn't help the world as much as I thought I could at the time. I also found out that it's better to be assertive with rude people than to be aggressive or passive.
So if you're thinking of seeing a counselor who specializes in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for the first time, you must realize that you likely do have at least some irrational beliefs. And a good CBT therapist can help you replace unhealthy, irrational beliefs with more healthy, rational beliefs over time.
