Depression

My son is 26 yrs old he has recently been told by his girlfriend of 5yrs that she no longer loves him ‘spark is gone’ He has suffered from mild depression in past when they had quarrels but now he is sinking slowly, he blames himself saying he should have been more attentive and supportive and that he is not worthy. He is a fantastic person would always give her whatever she wanted or asked for, was always ready to help in any way, up until days before the breakup she was with him arranging a holiday paid by him, and suddenly she dropped the bombshell, the first two days he was adamant he could win her back if he changed but she has told him in no uncertain terms there is no way ....I don’t know what to do to help and I worry he will sink into bad depression He not eating or sleeping well

When you're in love with someone and the relationship ends, you have to go through a grieving process. Going through a grieving process is normal.

I agree with Karen that you should keep an eye on your son. Try the best you can to be there for him during this difficult time.

Unfortunately, only time can heal this kind of wound, at least in my experience. Just be there for him as the days go by and it gets easier, hopefully. But as others have said, watch for signs of clinical depression and take him to a doctor if necessary.

The "good" news is that with the "spark is gone" argument, chances are your son could not have done much. The cards were stacked against him in this relationship from the start. It just means that there was no good match and this would have become clear sooner or later -- ideally before a marriage so there's no need for a divorce.
