Life is a Joke. Remember that. And also remember that it is an entendre, and possibly a double entendre, something you haven't thought about in years. I don't know, we're looking into that.

Dogs are indeed a joy. I can remember playing games with my dogs in the living room. I looked at them as great companionship. The last one, I sometimes took very, long walks with around the neighborhood, or two or three.

I would pick up trash, doing my civic duty. With the dog, I was OK. Without the dog, I wouldn’t have taken those walks. I always thought I was protecting the dog, and he was protecting me.

Now that I don’t have a dog, I basically jump up when I hear a sound at 2 in the morning. With the dog, I didn’t really hear those sounds because the dog was taking care of everything.

Two of my favorite dog stories. One day I was at the house by myself, and since I didn’t drive, there was no car in the driveway, since my wife was at work. A rickety old car rides up, thinking no one is at home. A guy with his cigs rolled up into his tee shirt opens the door and puts one foot on the cement.

Well, that’s all my dog needed as I was looking out the kitchen window at the proceedings and my dog at my feet was hearing the sounds and noticing I wasn’t greeting these people. At the sound of the car door opening, my dog let him have it with loud barks. The man got back in the car. OK, he saved my life.

2nd story. I have an aversion to sound. My dog and I were walking and I had on limited ear protection. My dog hears what turns out to be shotgun blasts 500 yards away. I didn’t know what it was, I had on limited ear protection. My dog also has sensitive ears to noise and he knows my ear condition. So, he puts his body in front of mine. Yeah, OK, we’ll go back. I later learned it was shot gun blasts.

A Gift to Share

I was given a smile the other day
From someone who passed me on their way.
I wasn't sure what I should do.
Perhaps, I'll leave it up to you.

If I should keep it for myself,
Put it on the kitchen shelf.
Then it would be a certainty
To bring some happiness to me.

Somehow that doesn't feel just right
For me to keep it in my sight
When there were others who might need
A waft of warmth, oh yes indeed.

It doesn't take so very much,
A cheerful smile, a gentle touch,
To lift the cloud another bears,
To help them feel somebody cares.

There is one thing we all should know.
A smile is like the candle's glow.
No matter how many candles share
That light, its fullness still is there.

So when I go out on the street,
No matter whom I chance to meet,
If I share with them my precious smile,
Do you think that will be worthwhile?

For hopefully, they too, will understand
That a smile is like a helping hand.
I'm hoping that you will agree
And someday share a smile with me.
