25th Set of Quotes, Poems or Songs. This is a Song, "Morning Side of the Mountain"

Here is the 25th set of quotes, poems or songs. This is a song in keeping with Joyce’s (PA grandma) column that was on this forum.

I filled in for her for a week and my columns had a lot of sayings and poems in them.

The person who initiated the column was Joyce, who was really nice. At one time she was a radio announcer in Manhattan. Her career as an artist included magazine and book illustration, commercial art, and sculpture, as noted in her obit sent to the website by one of her sons.

Her last column was on May 1, 2018. She passed away Dec. 19, 2018, at 83, according to her obit.

The song above is titled, “Different Drum” and begins,
“You and I travel to the beat of a different drum
“Oh, can't you tell by the way I run
“Every time you make eyes at me?”

The song was written by American singer-songwriter Michael Nesmith of The Monkees in 1964 but that group did not perform it because the producers of the TV show by that name turned it down. It was first recorded by the The Greenbriar Boys in 1966 but it did not become popular until 1967 when it was performed by the Stone Poneys featuring 21-year-old Linda Ronstadt. They took their version of "Different Drum" to No. 12.

As a female singer, Linda Ronstadt’s version completely turned the song upside down, as it began as a male-written, male-dominated tune. With Ronstadt, it became a female-dominated song as she put the male and convention back on its heels, highly unusual in 1967, singing:

“So, don't get me wrong, it's not that I knock it
“It's just that I am not in the market
“For a boy who wants to love only me”

The way Ronstadt sings it, no one realizes it was supposed to be the opposite, as the writer of the song, Mr. Michael Nesmith, acknowledges when he said, Ronstadt's performance "infused it with a new level of passion and sensuality" (that the male version did not have).

Ronstadt herself wasn’t so sure when she said about the song, which had been changed from male to female and from ballad to Rock & Roll, “that she had been surprised and `completely confused` by the changed approach to the song and that even years later she perceived "fear and a lack of confidence" in her performance.

When you listen to the song, you don’t hear any confusion, but rather “a new level of passion and sensuality" (from the male version) as the melody’s writer said, and she brought the previously little known tune, which was written in 1964, to #12 on the Cash Box Top 100 in 1967. Again, Ronstadt’s version flips the gender references in Nesmith's original lyrics, replacing "girl" with "boy" when describing her lover, but still referring to him being "pretty,” a carry-over from the way it was originally written for a male to sing, vocalizing to his girlfriend and calling her “pretty.” (Wikipedia)

It was pre-women’s lib and the producers almost didn’t know what they had, first thinking of having Ronstadt sing it as a ballad not Rock & Roll. Between 1964 when it was written and 1966 when it was sung by males (the Greenbriar Boys) and 1967 when it was performed for the first time by a female, Linda Ronstadt, times had inched unperceptively forward and Ronstadt unknowingly found herself at the forefront and at center stage for an entire movement, or, as Bob Dylan said in 1964, “The Times They Are A-Changin’.” That proved prophetic.
